Zot usually does well for his doses, but last night, he got upset and moved away. I had already pushed the needle in, unsure how much insulin actually got in, if any at all. I definitely made contact, though.

As many people are aware, Zot has been constipated since the 25th of last month. Today, he tried to go and only got half of it out. I tried to assist him, but it caused him great distress, and he's very upset with me. I contacted the vet to see about lactulose and discuss the issue again. She is in operation at the moment but should hear from her soon.

It still seems very dark and hard despite the Miralax and Pumpkin so far. I just wasn't sure if I should assist it the rest of the way out or wait for the Vet to contact me.

On the bright side, he forgave me for messing with him when I opened the curtains for him to look out.
 
His numbers are looking good. If it was a furshot, he's about the same, maybe a teensy bit higher. I hope that you can get the constipation issue worked out. It's always worrisome to me when there is a plumbing issue. Well, any issue is worrisome to me, but those basic eating, drinking, peeing, and pooping issues are top of the list.

Are you making sure to hold the syringe with the bevel down? Are you giving food or treats when shooting?

I like an open window, too.

Me too, he did finally get the rest out on his own, so maybe miralax and pumpkin are helping. But it's still very concerning, still waiting to hear back from the Vet. Yes, I'm a very anxious person, so whenever I see changes in his behavior or usuals scares me a lot.

He gets his meal while he's being dosed. In the beginning, he'd just tense up from the temperature of the insulin; now, he tenses so much when he feels me trying to make a tent with his skin, which makes it really difficult to pull up the skin to make a tent. I know there are other spots that I can inject, but he absolutely does not have it. He's been overall really great with injections, no problems, it's just been the last couple of days. Might be fed up with me poking and prodding at him. Then again, he still is sitting well in my lap, purring for testing, so I'm not sure what changed.

EDIT: Bevel faces up when I shoot.

Stephanie, Here is a link to a convo we had on the forum not too long ago (condo on insulin stinging) related to the fact that Lantus can have a stinging effect for some cats. I can't imagine the small dosage you're giving him having this affect, but who knows, and it's basically good information to know. I started putting Jude's syringe between his warming mittens after I used them to warm his ears, so the cold insulin wouldn't worry him upon injection. I do think the insulin stings Jude, though, and there isn't a lot to do about that other than take it slowly. The lower dosage he's on now doesn't seem to bother him as much. I hope Zot's pulling away was just a one-off.

Thank you <3 I am unsure as well because when he was receiving his initial 1u dose, he had no reaction aside from tensing. Hard to tell if it's the temperature or maybe stinging. Do you think warming him in a heated blanket would help? I thought about that in the past, but thought maybe the contrast of being warm would make the cold injection feel all the more cold. I do roll the bottle in my hands gently, like the vet suggested before injection, but I wonder if I'm not doing it long enough.

I don't know that warming Zot would help the injection, though he would probably enjoy that. Also, I don't think you're supposed to roll Lantus. There are some insulins, like Vetsulin, that are rolled prior to injecting, but not Lantus. @Staci & Ivy, am I correct?

Oh, I hope I've not been doing that this whole time for it to be a bad thing. The vet and vet tech did it, and told me I could. I hope I didn't make a mistake. :(

EDIT: quick google search says that it should not be rolled. I will no longer roll it, it doesn't seem discolored or off, so hopefully should be fine.

Correct, Mary, as Bron said, do NOT roll the bottle.
I hold the syringe between my fingers as Ivy eats, just to warm the insulin in the syringe only.

Stephanie, I hope your vet has suggestions about constipation you can use to avoid this ongoing. There are lots of posts on this forum about this issue.
You can always make a specific post on the Main page with a question about it and I’m sure you will get lots of ideas to help.
