Pookey gave me a gift yesterday at PMPS!

I chatted last night with the vet about his arthritis and cataracts. For arthritis, she is willing to prescribe Adequan as long as I’m aware that it’s off-label and there hasn’t been any research done for its use in cats. For the cataracts, she said we could hold tight and monitor, or travel to see an ophthalmologist for further testing.

I think I’m going to see the Cosequin through and then decide. Also thinking I will hold off on the eye doctor since he isn’t showing symptoms.

Feels good to have a plan. Happy to hear any of your thoughts or suggestions. - Tim

I don't know anything about the medicines, but I think the cataract plan sounds good. I'll be interested to see if anyone else has some advice. My vet isn't a fan of the surgery; he says it's more problematic than it's worth, but that's one opinion. I'm glad that Pookey was so kind to give you a little green gift last night--he's such a good boy! Head scritches to Pookey.

Totally unrelated, but I don't see minnerpip on here anymore. I miss her.

Glad you guys got a plan, and I’d do the same. For older cats with older cat issues, I agree to let it lay if it’s not bugging them. His numbers are looking great!

Thanks Mary! If it looked like it was affecting them it might be a different story. And I know, haven’t seen Laura around in a while.

Hi Tim, sounds like a good plan. Hopefully the Cosequin will help ,if not I'm glad your vet is open to try the Adequan. I would hold off on seeing the eye doctor for now :bighug::bighug::cat:

A heated cat bed or pad might help Pookey's joints feel less achy. I have SnuggleSafe pads for the cats and a plug in pad. Only civvie uses them.

Just curious, did your vet actually diagnose cataracts by ophthalmic exam? If not, it’s possible they just assumed cataracts, when it could be lenticular sclerosis. I have experience with both in 2 different dogs. Lenticular sclerosis is more of a bluish haze that appears cloudy, but cataracts will have opacities in the lens(es) which depending on how much of the opacity is affecting the lens will affect vision; low % opacity generally means not much loss of vision, and the higher the opacity, the greater vision loss. Lenticular sclerosis on the other hand does not significantly affect vision. With my current GSD I did lens replacement surgery when his cataracts reached 80%. I’ll leave it at that, but let me know if you want more info down the road.

Thanks Christie! They definitely just looked at his eyes and noticed a little opacity when the light hits a certain way. Interesting though, I didn’t know about the other condition, I’ll do some reading!
