2/11 | Jude: PMPS 76; +1 83; +2 72; +3 68; +4 68

Jude ate a small amount of his regular LC food at breakfast--I withheld his normal amount in case he decided to dive later in which case I wanted him to be hungry. His bg dropped by 10 pts. @ +1, then 10 pts @+2, and then 10 pts by +3. I tried to give Jude food--HC, MC, LC, any food I had available--but he would not (still will not) eat. At +3, I rubbed honey in his mouth, and he bounced up to 90 @ +4. I'm going to take him to the vet to see if something is happening with him to cause his appetite to be so poor. He's normally a big eater. I can't run the risk of him diving like this without the ability to manipulate him with carbs to bring him up. I'm not sure what the solution is.

Is he eating a lot less? You won't see the same ravenous hunger you did when was unregulated. Their appetites do come down once BG is in the normal range. Do you remember how much he used to eat before he fell out of remission and is he eating less than that?

I think you could take another reduction tonight. He's down at +5 even after honey at +3.

You know, Bhooma, I can't completely remember how much he was eating because I didn't really pay attention to what he was eating--I didn't have to (and there is another cat eating out of his same bowl). I think he and his sister shared a 3.5 tin +1/2 a tin twice a day. Recently, he could eat a tin almost by himself, and I would usually feed him something periodically during the day.

He's occasionally picky about his food and not always a fan of new food--he has to warm up to it. But when he turned his nose up at the beef HC?? That was really odd. He ate a bit of the chicken liver/heart gravy lovers last night, but today he wouldn't touch it (or any of the other six foods I offered him).

He's 59 @ +6; I just gave him some more honey. I won't give him anymore--but he should be going up on his own by now.

I took Jude to the vet today to have him checked over to see if something is causing his lack of appetite. First the vet examined Jude, and he has lost about 1/2 lb (which is surprising to me because he normally eats a lot). Then they ran a full blood panel, a urinalysis, etc. Nothing showed up on the blood panel except for elevated liver enzymes, and the vet said he wanted to look a bit more into that. Jude does not have an elevated thyroid. His kidney function is good. Jude does have a mild UTI, which, given his very low bg numbers was super surprising to me since normally a UTI throws his numbers sky high. The vet started Jude on Clavamox today to treat the UTI. He also said Jude's teeth are very bad. I had his teeth cleaned within the last couple of years, but the vet said diabetics just tend to have bad teeth. We have an appt. for a dental on 2/25. The doctor also wants me to drop Jude's Lantus by .50u at the next dose. He said (like many of you do), you can always bring him up if the new dose doesn't work. He doesn't know why Jude's appetite is off; he said it could be a result of the lower bg, but he said nothing in the blood work indicates something that would cause a lack of appetite. I'm wondering if the elevated liver enzyme issue has something to do with this. Also, I have been noticing Jude's eyes are quite dilated here lately, so I mentioned that to the vet; it turns out that Jude has cataracts and is very likely going blind.:( Poor buddy.

Ahhh I’m sorry Mary. On a positive note, nothing too crazy in the bloodwork is good news! And you have a plan in place for the teeth which I’m sure will help him feel better. We found out Pookey has cataracts today too, still processing that…

:bighug: Big hugs to you Mary :bighug: Geez I thought cateracts were pretty rare in cats and now Jude and Pookey has it?! I hope you and Jude have an uneventful snuggly night.
Thanks, Laurie! Same to you and Petey.

@Tim & Pookey, do you think this is a yellow tabby thing or a diabetic cat thing? Or neither? What does the vet say about Pookey's vision? Is he symptomatic? As I said, Jude's eyes have looked dilated lately, and sometimes when the light strikes them a certain way, I've wondered if he had cataracts. I don't think I'm seeing other symptoms except that, sometimes at night, in the past year or so, Jude will cry outside my room (I don't let the cats in my bedroom because sleep is a delicate flower for me, one that the cats trample all over), and now I'm wondering if he's been doing that because he's having trouble seeing.

Jude is 76 @ his PMPS. I gave him a dose reduction and shot him at 2.25. I'll monitor at +1 and +2 and try to carb him up if we're diving. I've withheld his normal full supper this evening in case I need to keep him hungry. Let's hope we all get some sleep around here tonight. I'm not built for these roller coaster rides we've been having.

Wow, what a day for Jude BG wise too. Stay safe tonight!

Only symptom I’ve noticed is slightly cloudy look when the light hits the eyes a certain way. He’s super responsive, looks at us, tracks toys, etc. Have you noticed any bumping into things? Vet said that’s usually a symptom. I bet you and I are at the early stages.

Yes, I've noticed the cloudy thing too. I haven't noticed him bumping into things. That's gonna be sad.

How did the vet diagnose the UTI? Btw, Clavamox is notorious for making kitties feel terrible and rob them of their appetite. You want to give a probiotic like S. Boulardii 2 hours apart from the Clavamox.

I wonder if dental issues are causing him to eat less?

Good luck with the reduction! I won't be surprised if it holds. It will take 4 cycles for the depot to adjust and for you to know what the reduced dose is doing for him.

Hi Bhooma, The vet did a urinalysis to diagnose the UTI. Jude has taken Clavamox before--the only side effect he has from it is diarrhea. I give him Fortiflora; does that have S. Boulardii in it? Or should I look for a different probiotic?
