Vet visit went well. Will not have bloodwork back until later today. At his last visit the vet said he had some rumbly breathing thinking it was asthma. This time it was gone. As you might remember a google search did show research saying excess glucose produces extra mucous in the respiratory system just like it dumps the sugar in urine. Runny nose and noisy breathing is gone now.

Mac's bounce today could be from a number of things. He had several pill pockets yesterday as that is the only way I can dose his 100 MG gabapentin for the visit.

Potential for this bounce to break later today as it has before and will be on the lookout for that late in the cycle.

I am going to try a small dose of Meloxicam (1 drop) for his arthritis which is getting worse. He is on Adequan already. A Pill Pocket worked perfect for this as I just put the drop in it and he took it pretty well. But I also know Pill Pockets have carbs and wonder if 1 pill pocket would make that much of a difference or is there another option for a delivery mechanism or maybe the best timing for this dosing. Mac is a geriatric cat. What I read on here is that the conservative use of Meloxicam for this situation the benefits outweigh the risks.

The vet recommended this over Onsier and Solensia. She said if it was her cat this is what she would do (and has done with her own). She said they have seen some kidney issues with Solensia.
 
Hi! For Bella, I use clear capsules and put the pill inside, and then I roll it in cream cheese. When she needs gabapentin, I use the liquid form and add it in her food.

Meloxicam is also sometimes prescribed off-label for cats to manage chronic pain from arthritis. However, cats that take meloxicam on a long-term basis have a higher risk of serious side effects like kidney failure. Meloxicam should always be given to cats under the guidance of a licensed veterinarian.

I think pill pockets are something like 68% carbs. Otoh they are 3 cal so the percent of total food eaten that cycle is raised but no where near 68%. Still since my boy needs 2.5 pill pockets a day I’ve wanted an alternative. Some say they feed pills in cheese and I’m considering that except he needs to avoid high fat also. If you’re giving 100 mg of gaba why not get the 100mg capsule, open and dump into small amt of food? I did that until the 100mg was too much for him. The 50 and 25 mg tablets from chewy are the size of a baby aspirin..I’ve tried hiding in tiny amt of food with mixed results. I’ve put in half a pill pocket.

chewy doesn’t make them but other compounding pharmacies can make gabapentin in a medimelt—it dissolves in their mouth after you pill them with it. If methos would eat what I cook I’d poach chicken and use a tiny piece but he doesn’t like my poached chicken when I tried just cooking for him. I’m considering getting chicken liver and baking them then using a piece but I need to calculate the carbs in liver as I’m strarting to wonder if a recent bump I saw in his BG is related to crumbled liver to entice him to eat I’ve used recently
 
Sounds like you have Meloxicam in liquid format? Back in the day, and remembering I am in Canada that doses differently, we used to just give it mixed in with food when I worked at the shelter. Maybe try a little Churu puddle with it mixed in? I have also heard of people putting a gel cap in a Churu puddle.

Thanks Wendy! Yes I had read both those posts. Tthat is what made me feel better about it. Also I like your idea of putting it in a churu puddle.

Thanks for the information. I am under the guidance of a licensed veterinarian. It is a very conservative dose of a single drop. I am going to try it to see if it actual helps him. He has good renal blood values right now.

Thanks! Mac daily gets just a 25 mg tiny pill. But when I have to take him to the vet I have to give him 4 of those to get to the 100 MG . Thanks for contributing to my question.:bighug:

She had told me about Solensia and was more of an advocate when it first came out. Perhaps she has seen some situations arise in her practice. I never went with it because the studies I had seen had as many cat's responding to placebo's as they did the actual drug + the expense and doctor's visit required. Anyway we'll see how this goes.

FYI His bloodwork came back great. (except for BG). Liver, Kidney, Thyroid, etc. all normal numbers and no new issues!!
