Congratulations on the blue preshot. As Jason said it’s a great sign.
Pookey and Ivy are about the same age (if 13.5 is right).
My nutritionist called her a little old lady yesterday when I talked to her.
And while part of me recognizes she’s an old lady, I still look at her and think of her as my baby.
I’m just one of those crazy cat ladies I guess :cat::rolleyes::bighug:

Yes, I updated my signature already. He is 13.5. It just doesn’t register to me that they are on the older side, I’m sure you feel the same!

We found some pictures yesterday of Pookey from when we rescued him. Look how tiny!

Oh my he is so precious! So tiny.
I just don’t know where the time has gone either.

Here’s the first pics of Ivy from the woman who found her walking alone on a city street and scooped her up. I adopted Ivy when she was about 6 weeks old :cat:

Hey @Tim & Pookey, I see your yesterday comments on figuring out the Relion meter with blood samples, not sure how the AT meter works, but with the Relion what works for me is to do a scooping of the blood. So almost flush against the ear, but not completely flat, you should try scooping it in the test strip. If you get the angle right, you can get a very small sample without needing a lot of blood.

I was just doing a test with my KetoSense Blood Ketone meter and it prefers a total top down method to pull the blood into the sample area.

FYI - I use a 28 gauge lancet and normally only use the bevel of it, rarely do I go in past that.

Interesting. So kind of come at it like you’re going to shovel the blood with the strip? This morning I actually got it on my nail by accident and read it that way lol.

Exactly, that's been working great for us. And, whenever I have some excess blood on the strip after the scoop, I carefully set it down and quickly grab my ketone meter to use that same blood with the ketone meter to get a reading as well for good measures.

I’m guessing the AT was retired by @Tim & Pookey but for anyone else reading this don’t scoop onto the AT strip (if I understand that correctly). If you’re saying approach with the leading edge at an angle with the AT that’s ok to let it suck up blood from an angle but keep blood off the top of an AT strip if possible. There’s a tiny round area at the proximal end of the siphon area—that’s a vent. If you get blood over that area it causes false readings. Which is why the guide says don’t put blood on top of strip but imho they should have explained “why”
 
Pookey just threw up for the first time since being diagnosed. The throw up was the wet food he had at PMPS. This happened just now at +1.5.

Any cause for concern? He did eat it fast. Should I offer more wet?
 
Likely nothing to worry about, it happens sometimes. Any hairballs in the mix, or just some food? He may not have throw up the whole lot, give him a little breather and maybe offer a smaller snack, 2 tsps at +2.

Thanks Christie. It looked like just food. I would say he threw up a third or half of what he had. I’ll offer some wet in a few minutes here and he does have his dry still.
 
Some cats will do a scarf and barf. If he consistently does that, you can get slow feeders that have obstacles in the dish they have to eat around.

I use the Relion as well and initially was having issues getting a drop on it.

My technique now is to actually use my finger to slightly bend the strip. So I get it close to the blood drop and then just bend it down to suck up the droplet. This was way easier for me than trying to maneuver the entire device (I dropped it on Bell multiple times, which she didn't appreciate). Not sure if they technique would work with the AT as I've never used that device. Here's a photo of what I do:

Getting that tiny white part at the end of the strip maximum exposure to the blood drop just slurps it right up into the meter.

Interesting, that's an another way too.. thanks for sharing. Sometimes, I have the most tiny sample and it sucks it in quick. A lot of the time, the square window is not even full, maybe 30% full and I still get a reading.

For a $9 meter and $20 strips, it's really the best ever. I'll never switch...
