Hi all, just joined right now and so happy I found this forum!!! Jerry was diagnosed with diabetes almost a month ago. Initially we were on vetsulin and Libre sensor but it fell off and then another one got licked off so I got a human meter and poked him maybe 5 total attempts. We are back on Libre now, this time I did it myself and he’s wearing a jacket so far we are good but yesterday I noticed something is up with his ears. The are balding, inflamed, dry flaky and don’t look good, is this a side effect from insulin or from poking or totally unrelated? TYIA

Jerry |9yrs | DX 10/2/24 Lantus Insulin | libre3| | MPM Fancy Feast Classic Pate canned food and Young Again Lid/ Hills W/D dry

Hi a welcome to the forum.
Can you post a photo of the ears? To do that copy and paste the photo.
It won’t have anything to do with the insulin…maybe infected.
We normally don’t have much issue with testing and problems with the ears.
Don’t give up trying to hometest. We can help you

Just a FYI…the W/D dry food is very high in carbs. I would look at something else. The young again is a much better alternative.
What dose of insulin are you giving?
Here is a link to our spreadsheet if you would like to set up so we can help with dosing

Keep asking questions :)

Welcome Jerry, you are in the right place, we are here to help you in any concerns you may have to get you and Jerry in the right track, as Bron said dry foods contain approximately between 25-30% carbs, as well as dry treats, a diabetic cat needs to consume a diet between 0-10% carbs,(wet Food) they cannot digest the carbs so the pancreas can never heal, below is a Drs. Food List with many brands to choose from, the third column contains the % of carbs for each food, us member enjoy the Fancy Feast Pates, they are USA made, so no waste goes into the food, you want to have what is called a HYPO KIT handy, this contains, some medium carb foods between 11-15% and some high carb foods between 16-24% also some Karo syrup or honey, this is to be used when Jerry's BG gets to 50 BG or lower, but only then, and post us so we can go thru this together, it is good to use the human meter and strips, most of us use the ReliOn Premier, it is very inexpensive and very accurate, unlike the Libre as you already experienced, they fall off, removed and most of the time they do not last the 14 days, also the BG reading on High will only read up to 365-390 then you will only see HIGH on the screen, and the low readings are totally inaccurate up to 20 points, it is not hard to ear test, read the link Bron gave you, is a breeze and I see Jerry has black hair, you might want to get a small flashlight to be able to see the drop of blood, I place it in my mouth while I prick, in time the capillaries in the ear will swell and it gets much easier, hang in there, You Got This!!:bighug::cat::cat:

Thank you about the food. I noticed Tom his brother is gaining quite a bit of rapid weight once I switched to Hills dry food, I might have to go back to Purina for now while I acclimate both of them to Young again dry food… so far it’s not their favorite :/

Thanks for the photos.
Did the balding start after you did the pricks?
It is hard to see with one of the photos but the other one does look inflamed. Might be worth taking Jerry to the vet in case he needs antibiotics.

Did you by any chance use something on his ears before or after poking to clean them?
I will note that my boy has some fur loss on his ears but he has cushings so has fragile skin and hair loss as part of that so I’m not surprised—but I wonder if you may have used something on your boy’s ears, or perhaps had something on your hands as you handled his ears
