Sheila and Minky

Some of you know me from posting about Minky. Our little girl was diagnosed with hyperesthesia in June. The vet gave her a steroid shot and because she had a double ear infection, she also got steroid drops. I went to visit my dad in India and my husband said she wasn't eating well. I just thought it was from me being away. When I came back, I tried everything to get her to eat better. I realized something was very wrong. I thought maybe it was a broken tooth. It turns out she was in DKA and probably hepatic lipidosis. We ended up having to hospitalize her which was its own nightmare the latter half of her hospitalization. We pulled her out and prayed the Lord would provide a miracle. If not, we knew we only had a matter of time with her. Between testing, insulin, giving potassium, force feeding, working, and sleeping on a blow up bed downstairs things were crazy. She made progress and our prayers were answered. She is out of the crisis zone, but we have to be watchful she doesn't stop eating otherwise she will go right back to where she was. We are testing ketones, and being so vigilant with testing sugar levels.

I work two jobs--one full-time and one part-time. This week I got sick. I am trying to have a minimal amount of down time because I am needed especially by my kitties. Minky is eating so so. She isn't eating as well as I would like. On top of that now this past week her sister (we all have all three full-blooded sisters) is not eating well (and she loves her food). She threw up earlier in the week. Last night I thought I heard her cry in the box and turned around and she was peeing. My husband and I kept an eye on her, but again she ate very little last night. I tried her on some "dessert food"--food that is just meant for every once in a while--Applaws Tuna Mousse which she loves. She ate it all and ate a bit of her favorite Fancy Feast mixed seafood in gravy. I was so happy until a few minutes later she threw all of it up. She laid on the blow up bed we have downstairs and just constantly purred. I knew something was wrong. She finally got down and and looked around on our mat just inside our door looking like she was trying to find some grass or something that would make her sick. I finally broke down and tried to give her Cerenia. She was quite the fighter with the pill and it ended up staying in her mouth which caused drooling. I got the pill out but then she was afraid of me. I tried some mineral oil on her paw thinking maybe she was constipated. I had put a call into our vet for an emergency before 9:00 PM which is what the message said, but no call back. I called first thing this morning and the vet says she thinks she is constipated and to give miralax (1/4 tsp three times a day). They made an appointment for 9:20 on Monday which feels like a long time from now. I think maybe she had some of a bowel movement today but I can't be sure because there are three in the house, and I didn't see it. I have put some Vaseline on her paw a few times today. The thing that really worries me is she is not eating hardly at all. She nibbles on a little bit of wet food (have tried many flavors including her favorite one; the only one she completely eat is the dessert food) and she has had some dry food, but this is the same path Minky went down. Her sugar level was 77 last night and ketones was .1. I am so scared especially as it is a weekend. I am pleading with them to eat, but I feel so overwhelmed. On top of it I am sick and everything feels unbearable. I love my babies and want what is best for the; I just can't seem to think clearly. I feel overwhelmed at going to another emergency vet costing thousands of dollars and the emergency vets around here are terrible. Thank you for letting me post this.

I am so sorry things are hard again.
When you tested for ketones am I right in thinking the result was 0.1?
I can’t see where the BG was 77 last night. When was that?
You are still giving insulin, yes?
It is really important Minky eats and eats well, especially with the recent diagnosis of DKA and hepatic acidosis.
Try feeding her with what ever she will eat at the moment. It doesn’t matter if it is not low carb. The important thing is she eats.
I am thinking you really need to get her back to a vet and get some more antinausea medications. Either an injection to start with and then maybe some ondansetron tablets. They are better than cerenia for nausea. For those you need a script from the vet and you get the tablets at a human pharmacy. I think that is the best thing you could do. Iwould not wait until Monday, and I do question that it is only constipation causing this.
Also you can look at syringe feeding.
Here is a recent post from you on the Lantus page for continuity

I’ll tag @Bandit's Mom and @tiffmaxee to see if they have any other ideas.

Minky is not eating great but I will keep feeding her whatever she will eat. Most of the second paragraph is about her sister, Whisper, who is now acting sick. She is having similar symptoms and Minky was except her sugar was 77 and her ketones tested at .1 so it would seem she is not diabetic. I am concerned because Whisper and Minky are full blooded sisters.

Oh sorry for the mix up. I hope Whisper feels better soon.

Sheila -
I'm guessing your vet doesn't have weekend hours? If you need it, is there an emergency vet practice near you? If Whisper is constipated, pumpkin (pure pumpkin not pie filling) or squash baby food can help. Miralax is another option.

No she isn't open on the weekend. Closest er is an hour away. Thankfully Whisper had a bowel movement today and is eating better. I will take her in on Monday to see if everything is okay. It has just been a hard week with two sick kitties plus me being sick. And tomorrow is the one year anniversary of my mum passing away. Maybe I am just more sensitive as I don't want to lose my babies too.
