Jude went into remission back in April of this year, after being diagnosed in March. I believe (and the vet does too) that his diabetes was steroid induced, as it occurred after he'd had a steroid shot (he had a UTI and was given an antibiotic shot + a steroid shot and he became suddenly very sick with high b.g.). He went on Lantus and a low carb diet right after the diagnosis, and he almost immediately began moving toward remission. I still check his b.g. every week (I know checking it monthly is the protocol, but I worry). Back in August, he shot up to 179, but then went back down the next day. A few days ago, he shot up to 174, and then the next morning he was 244, but back down to 135 by the end of day. Of course I wanted to rule out the possibility of infections causing the spikes, so I took him to the vet. He does have a UTI, which we began treating this morning with Clavamox. I checked his b.g. tonight and it's 245. Here's my question: if the spike is, indeed, infection-related, is he going to remain elevated or up and down until we get the infection knocked out? Is it okay for him to run in the 200s while he's sick? The doctor told me it was okay and that this is likely only a spike because he's carrying this infection. What do you think?
