My sweet babe Kuzko is doing great on his ProZinc 5U BID. His numbers are looking good, I do have a feeling the vet may want to increase the units more. However, since he’s now on 5U I’m going through a vial in about 4 weeks. The cost of each vial is $125. I obviously have to buy a new vial before the old one runs out. So I’m basically buying 2 vials a month. I asked to change the insulin but the vet gave me two other insulin options and said look into it. GUIDANCE??

Welcome Becca and Kuzco, we need a bit more information to be able to guide you, I use ProZinc as well 1.25u every 12 hours, it sound like 5 units is a lot of insulin, also once you open a vial is good for 60 days, must be refrigerated at the same temperature, always, I will tag a ProZinc expert for you, also below there will be 2 links there will be instructions and what we need to get to know Kuzco more, also there's a food chart for you to choose from many brands, out diabetic babies must have a content of 0-10% carbs in foods, many of us member enjoy the variety of flavors that Fancy Feast Pates have also in US made, so no waste goes in their foods, dry foods and treats, contain a very high content of over 20-25% carbs, which beats the purpose of the insulin, also home testing is very important especially before every shot, the rule is test, feed, shoot, a great inexpensive glucometer is the ReliOn Premier monitor and strips, there are many stick notes in the Main Forum that will show help you along to get you and Kuzco on the right track , remember no concern is ever to small, we are here to help you:bighug::cat::cat:

What other options did he give you? Im using Glargine (a generic lantus) for Methos. There’s 1000 units in a 10ml vial; I just picked one up at Walmart for $75.

I’m srry I should have been more specific. The cost of it is to much for me now that it is 5 U. He’s been a diabetic for almost a year now. So I’m pretty well versed with everything. I’m just trying to find other insulin options because it’s too much $

I have looked everywhere for other places that carry prozinc and the cost are all the same. My vet basically told me to call the pharmacies to see if they provide that insulin. I’m more than willing to do that but I feel they would have heard throughout their career which ones can be found in pharmacies. There was no other guidance than that

Since Prozinc is for animals it’s unlikely any human pharmacy carries it. Chewy online pet pharmacy does. Glargine is carried by human pharmacies. As I mentioned in my town the cheapest source is Walmart (ymmv) at $75 for 1000U vial. I don’t know how many units your kitty would end up needing if switched.
If Prozinc works well it may be worth checking Chewy’s price and also other online pet pharmacies rather than go through switching his insulin.
I’m going to assume he meant for you to research online pet pharmacies to compare costs. Costs can vary from time to time at all online sites. My vet knew the cheapest human pharmacy for Glargine (lantus generic) because it could be bought locally

I hope you find something that works. It will probably only take a few min online to price compare Prozinc. Also you can ask if your vet price matches. Mine does. So each month when I pick up vetoryl (makes insulin seem reasonable) they will match their price to the cheapest place I could find at online pet pharmacy and I don’t need to deal with buying online.
 
It sounds like the cost for Prozinc is the same at your vet as with Chewy. It looks like even with a comparison on GoodRx, that's about the best price give or take a few dollars.

Vetsulin is not a great insulin for cats. It was developed for dogs and does not give you the same duration and it's notorious for dropping numbers hard and fast. The two insulins that are recommended by the American Animal Hospital Assn for the treatment of feline diabetes are Prozinc and Lantus. Lantus is now available in a generic/biosimilar form, glargine. For Lantus/glargine, I'd encourage you to call around to your local pharmacies including places like Costco or Sam's Club. You don't need a membership to use the pharmacy. There are also coupons available that can sharply discount the price. @Diane Tyler's Mom GA usually has the info on coupons.

Most members get the generic you can get generic/biosimilar glargine at very reasonable prices using GoodRx coupon. Most members use the generic because Lantus is to expensive.

Make sure that the Match your prescription pull down menu says generic glargine 1carton of 5 3ml pens.

Lantus usually doesn't kick in until 2 hours after the shot

We buy the pens but use the syringes to draw out the insulin because if you use the pen you can only adjust by full units ,we adjust the doses by 0.25units
If you do switch to lantus the generic you will need
U -100 SYRINGES WITH HALF UNIT MARKINGS

The 5 pens will last about a year, we use the pens just like a vial, you would just insert the syringe it the gray rubber stopper on the pen and draw out your insulin
