Vet recommend 2 units of Lantus? Does this seem correct?

My kitty was diagnosed and started Lantus about a month ago. We just did a curve and she recommended going from 1 to 2 units. I read on this website with Lantus you usually go up .25 units, so just wanted to see if this made sense? I trust my vets advice just wanted a second opinion.

This was his curve:

7:20 am - 371 ( 1.5 can of wet food & 1 unit of insulin)

10:20 - 352

1:20 - 326 (1/2 can wet food after)

4:20 - 392

7:20 - 400 (1 can of wet food & 1 unit of insulin)

Sorry I am just seeing this.
With the numbers in the 300s you could go up 1/2 unit but I am only seeing one cycle and not a weeks numbers. I would not go up 1 unit.
If you could set up a spreadsheet we can help you with dosing. Cats blood glucose changes every day so just seeing 12 hours in isolation is not enough .
Did you do the curve at home or at the vet?
I’ll give you the link to our spreadsheet below.
Do you have a hypo kit set up?

Thank you for the info! I took a break from testing for a week or so, which I know is not recommended but I have another senior cat with IBD and a toddler and it was causing me way too much stress to do daily testing. He’s always had the same high numbers every time I’ve tested over the course of the month. I’ll try to put together the spreadsheet. I did the curve at home. I have honey and maple syrup at home.

Welcome BuddyBoy, you are in the right place, there are experts member that will assist you in any concern you may have no matter how small. As Bron explained it is important we know as much if not more about Buddy. Home testing is important especially before each insulin shot, you want to make sure the Buddy's glucose number is appropriate to shoot, and he should have food as well, never shoot on an empty stomach The food diet is also very important diabetic cats should eat food that are between 0-10% carbs I am adding a Dr's Food Chart for you, there are many brands to choose from, the third column has the % of carbs, a lot of members use Fancy Feast it is USA made so no waste goes in the food, reference to your Hip Kit you should include some Medium food between 12-14 % carbs and High Carbs such as gravies 15% up, stay away from the dry treats they are also very high in carbs, natural treats are better, like 1% hams, FF has natural tuna treats, boiled chicken etc. you want to stay away from the honey and syrup, before trying to raise the numbers, honey and syrup is a quick fix, as you read a lot of the sticky notes in the main Forum and trying to read other members post, and members guidance you will be a pro in no time, it is overwhelming at first especially with your full plate, but we are here to help you , make your spreadsheet as soon as you can, it will much easier to assist you :bighug::cat::cat:

Thank you for the info! I feel pretty confident he’s on the right diet. He only eats fancy feast chicken pate. No other treats or food.

I’ll do some research on the hypo kit! I didn’t know that a medium/high carb food could be an option vs the honey or syrup. I’ll try to work on a spreadsheet when I have time. Thank you again!

Yes, depending on the glucose reading the numbers can be regulated thru teaspoons of low to medium carb food per testing/hour if you Kitty were to reach the 60’s you give medium carbs teaspoon at a time testing every hour, the Kari/honey, and or high carb is when his glucose is in the 50s and only then, the syrups as I said is a quick fix for you to be able to do the rest like food etc. you can rub the syrup on his gums if it happened to drop very low under 50 you give about 1/2-1 ml of the syrup in a syringe but only then, :bighug::bighug::cat::cat:
 
I’m just noting that you use an Alpha Trak while many here use human meters. If you tested the same drop of cat blood with a human meter and the AT, the human meter will always read lower. so keep in mind that when blood glucose levels are mentioned on the website (for instance give medium carbs at 60) that your action point is going to be higher than that. You could guesstimate a number but imho asking your vet what’s low enough to take action is the wisest way. For my vet 80 on my AT is the feed higher carb if trending down number, 60 the karo number depending on different factors
