Testing schedule??

Hello all. My 14yo cat was diagnosed last month with diabetes. She started off on vetsulin but was not responding well, and was just changed to lantus. I have a question regarding testing that I have not been able to get a straight answer on.

When and how often should I be testing her sugar? Before food? Before food and insulin? After food but before insulin?

Welcome Jessica, I am an obsessive tester but it is very important you test your kitty before each insulin shot in the spread sheet or it is called AMPS/PMPS, to make sure you are not administering the insulin on a low Glucose number or BG, below you will see in Blue, how I test my Corky, and when and the feeding times and hours, when you scroll the spreadsheet to the right end
also, there are links that will help you in different areas such as what foods are right for a diabetes cat, the proper amount of carbs is very important, the food should contain between 0-10% carbs and no gravies I am also sending you a Food Chart with all the different name brands of food the third column is where you will find the % of carbs for each food, quite a lot of the members here loke Fancy Feast, this food is USA made, which means it is regulated no dead stuff in them and then some, I hope the spreadsheet can help your concern I will also tag one of the experts in the type of insulin you are using :bighug::cat::cat:

Hi Jessica and welcome
As mentioned above it’s important you test before every dose to see it is safe to give the dose. And then if you can get a test in sometime between +4and +7 that will give you an idea how low the dose is taking your kitty.

We generally recommend that you test a minimum of 4 times each day. You always want to test prior to giving a shot. The pre-shot test ensures that it's safe to give insulin. You will want to test, feed, then give insulin. Many of us give our cat their insulin injection when they are busily eating. The other two tests involve getting at least one test during both the AM and PM cycles. Testing close to nadir (lowest point in the cycle) is helpful since it lets you know how effectively the insulin is bringing down numbers. The only way to find out when your cat's nadir falls is to do a curve (i.e., testing every 2 hours over a 12-hour cycle).

The frequency of testing depends a lot on your cat and on you. My cat had an early nadir and was quite capable of diving into very low numbers. I would test a lot in order to make sure that I could catch a sudden drop in numbers. Over time, you will also begin to have a handle on your cat's patterns.
