Need help with Beau’s dosing!!

My retired nurse friend went with me because I was such a wreck and she was worried about me. She was shocked at that amount of fluid.

No wonder he was so miserable, on top of just being sick. It’s probably been brewing for a couple of weeks, during that time his BG was nice and low, but he wasn’t eating.

I have a partial vial of meds leftover from treating one of my fosters so I can start today. I’ve already ordered more meds.
Hopefully, he should start feeling a little better daily over the next week.

We discussed his diabetes. Dr G feels that his numbers should start to come down again as the treatment starts to work because his stress, pain and discomfort will be reduced.

I hope so.

I agree that his numbers should start to come down. Well we now have hope! We have a plan! I am feeling optimistic! You’ve got the this, Sharon!
 
I’m so glad you had a friend with you today. 600 mL of fluid in that small body! I have seen containers of fluid drawn off cats before and the most I have seen is 200 mL so I have a pretty good idea of what 600 mL would look like. :(
How is Beau feeling and acting tonight?

I know! That’s a huge amount of fluid! I can’t imagine how uncomfortable and awful he felt. My poor sweet boy.

He’s looks more comfortable tonight, but I can tell he doesn’t feel well. It’s not surprising because he is a sick boy. He’s not interested in food at all yet. He got another dose of Entyce today so, hopefully, that should take effect for morning.

I’m gearing up to give him his first injection of GS. I’m nervous because I’m not sure how he will respond.

He’s still dehydrated, so I’ll give him 50 ml fluids later, this time with some B12 added in.

How did your vet visit go?
 
The GS still comes from China, but it’s now legal to purchase. It’s no longer black market. No more sneaking around. There is a rescue and cat sanctuary near Fresno called Cat House on the Kings. They are now a supplier.

He’s better than the last few days. He’s spent all morning outside on the back deck, his favorite place to be. He’s more mobile, holds his head up more and just acts like he feels a little better. But I still can’t get him to eat. Put some very stinky Tiki Cat chicken and tuna pate in front of his face and he took a sniff and just got up and walked away. So that has me very frustrated.

I didn’t give him an injection last night because it turned out that what was left in the vial from treating Jasper was just enough for one dose. It won’t be here until tomorrow. We decided that it’s a better choice to give him his first dose tonight so I don’t need to skip an injection.

He must think I am annoying. I keep checking on him and giving him hugs. I’m so relieved it wasn’t cancer or a heart issue, but I’m still worried about him. Once I get a couple of doses in him I’ll feel better. Hopefully, he will, too.

Dr G said it’s even more important to keep a cat hydrated when they aren’t eating. Apparently their bodies are more able to be without food if they are hydrated.

His first injection, then, will be tonight. It’s a big one. 2.25 ml, because what I have is less concentrated. What I ordered is a greater concentration, so his dose will be 1.7.

I would worry about hepatic lipidosis with continued not eating. Maybe you should syringe feed a little bit? I will be glad when he starts getting the shots.

We did talk a bit about hepatic lipidosis. He didn’t seem too concerned at this point. But it has me worried, so I’m definitely going to try syringe feeding to try to get something into him. The dose of Entyce yesterday doesn’t seem to have done anything for him.

I will also feel much better when he gets that first shot tonight.

I am checking on him constantly.

He will get his first shot tonight from the vial I have. Tracking says my GS should arrive tomorrow from Fresno.

We should see results after the 2nd or 3rd shot. I hope so.

I syringe fed him a couple of hours ago and he wasn’t at all happy. Neither was I. It’s not something I like to do. Poor guy.

My poor sweet Beau. He must really feel awful. He had absolutely no reaction to his injection. Not a flinch, not a sound.

Now I’m feeling very afraid and worried. Maybe it took too long to diagnose and get him on meds.

No don’t think that! Let’s give it a chance. I know it’s really scary for him not to react. I would be upset too. But let’s give it time. You have experience with giving this med. How long before you saw the first signs of improvement?

With the first kitten it was really slow in coming. It was a few weeks before any real noticeable changes. She was somewhat resistant to the treatment.

But with Jasper, the most recent, I saw improvement after 3 days. And he was a really sick kitten. He was playing by day 6.
 
Okay. Well we will see how it goes with Beau. Cats can be really tough and very resilient. They can surprise us. My Ginger did this for a long time. Hopefully, Beau is a fighter Just keep doing everything you are doing to give him the best chance. It’s incredibly hard to see them so low though… hard and discouraging…and many times you feel like nothing you are doing is making any difference …. -and what else should you be doing… and are you doing the right thing. It’s a helpless feeling. But you need to let him have his chance to fight and recover and that’s what you are doing. He’s only ten years old and should have more good years ahead of him. My heart goes out to you!

Beau is still in kind of rough shape. And, of course, because I now know what’s wrong with him I just worry more. I know the importance of catching early and treating.
It’s been a tough couple of days. He’s been pretty weak, having some trouble walking, but still gets up and goes to different spots to rest. He’s urinated on his favorite bed twice a day the last 2 days. But I can see that he can’t get to the litter box. I have pee pads in a couple of the places he likes to sleep and rest. I put a waterproof pillowcase on the cushion on his favorite bed.

He had his 2nd injection last night. He seemed a little more alert this morning. And didn’t make that rough, deep purring noise when I pet him that started the day the fluids were drained. I thought it was breathing, but I think it was just a weird purr from being uncomfortable. Didn’t sound like it was coming from his chest.

But, the big news is that he actually showed interest in food for the first time since Saturday! I sat down next to him with a churu treat and when he saw it, he perked up. He licked up about half of a tube. I cried! He hasn’t willingly eaten anything since Saturday, like I said. 30 minutes later I opened a can of gravy food and set it in front of him. He took several licks of that, too. More cheers and tears! Maybe we are coming to that corner and he’s almost ready to turn it. I hope so. But, like I said, he still looks like a very sick kitty.

Because of that, I made an appointment to take him in tomorrow, just to have Dr G put eyes and hands on him. Make sure his breathing is good, etc. I don’t think he’s accumulating anymore fluid. If he is it’s a small amount. He weighs slightly less than he did after they drained everything on Monday. I know that’s mostly because he’s not eating and I can only get so much into him with a syringe. I just want to go into the weekend feeling better about where he is.

You can see that his BG has been coming down. I was thinking that maybe it’s because he’s not feeling as much pain and discomfort. Then I realized he’s also not eating, which will bring it down. He was at 79 +4 AMPS, which is the first time he’s been in the green in a week.

So, that’s where we are today. He’s still a very sick Beau, but maybe the shots are starting to help him. Fingers crossed.
 
So not out of the woods yet, but maybe turning a corner? Oh I do hope so! You definitely have some encouraging signs there, but it’s been weakening overall. It’s very scary when they get weak like that. So shot 3 tonight of the GS and off to Dr. G tomorrow. All paws crossed here for more improvement even today and tonight! I hope you won’t mind if I check in on you later today.

I also noticed that the lower BG numbers have coincided with the GS treatment and having that horrendous amount of fluid drained. I think the spreadsheet improvements are definitely a positive sign!!
 
How is Beau doing this evening? I see he had a great cycle today. Just make sure he’s eating enough to be able to steer his numbers if needed.
 
He has had a decent day. I need to syringe feed this evening, but he ate for the first time voluntarily in days. It wasn’t much. He ate about half a churu treat at two different times plus some gravy off the top of a can of food. I haven’t tried feeding him again tonight yet, but I’m concerned about his insulin. I haven’t even tried to feed him yet but I am pretty sure I won’t get enough food into him to steer his numbers up. I feel like I should give him less insulin tonight, maybe .5 less? I don’t know. I’m afraid he’ll drop too low otherwise. What do you think? I haven’t even tried to

He was a little more mobile today, changing his resting place often. He even went downstairs.

I’m going to take him in tomorrow morning just to have Dr G put eyes and hands on him. Want him to check his breathing and overall condition. I know we are just doing injection #3 tonight, but I feel like I will just worry too much over the weekend.

Buy my biggest concern right now is how much insulin to give him tonight.
 
So 68 PMPS. He ate 1 1/2 tubes of the churu treat and a few licks and couple of smile bites of Gravy Lovers. I’m really afraid that he’s going to drop and he won’t eat to be able to bring him up. I went with 1U. I’m going to keep offering him something to eat every couple of hours. I hope I can keep him in normal range.

Okay. I hope you are just busy and Beau is doing better. I am heading for bed because I hope to get almost 7 hours of sleep tonight. I will look in tomorrow morning first thing to see if you have a Beau update. Maybe you can start a new thread as this one is over 150 posts, I think. I was so worried about Beau and so much was happening that I didn’t want to ask you to start a new one.
