Good evening,

glad we saw some blue numbers last night and today. They could have been lower and lasting longer but we are working on it. And she lost a little weight again. I am curious if this is due to the low carb or maybe because her thyroid is adjusted better. We will find out with the next blood test.

The last weeks I was always a bit nervous, the libre falls off faster, because of the fur growing better. Last time we've been at the vet I asked them to use skin-tac before placing the libre. I bought something online and brought it to the vet. And it really helped so much, the libre is on day 11 now and it is still in place and sticking very well, even tough I can see the fur growing. Very happy about that! :)

Hope everyone is having a nice day! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Glad you’re getting the libre to last longer. Was it just the skin tac or did you buy something else too? Have a great day!

Hi Deb, it was just the skin tac, which seems to make a difference. In the past I applied tegaderm with skin tac after we came home from the vet but somehow Binie was botherd by the tegaderm more than by the libre and she tried everything she could to tear it off. I also bought some patches on Amazon in the past but was not convinced as well. So I am happy something is finally working.... How do you secure the libre?

The vet uses an adhesive and then Tiger wears a shirt. His hair grows fast so they use a little adhesive remover and it comes off clean with hair already in the spot. These are the shirts I found……

Thank you Deb! I'm sure Tiger looks super cute in these shirts! Unfortunately Binie gets crazy if I put her something on. I tried it after the surgery but she didn't move anymore and so she had to wear the cone. But we found good places on her body where she doesn't lick anymore. The first sensor she removed after three hours. :) Seems like you found a system which works for you and Tiger! Glad to hear that!

Good evening, Heike, I’m happy to hear that you are seeing some nice blue numbers for Binie. Good job, sweet girl.
I hope her wound is not bothering her today.

Does she have a thyroid issue? I don’t recall she had a problem.

I agree that Libre seems to be quitting fast. I assume the faster growth of hair in summer makes it happen. I’m glad you are using things that seem to help it last longer.

Hope you have a nice night and you both sleep well :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Either reason would be a good reason for losing weight if she needs to. :). When Neko was around, I adopted a fatty from the shelter who lost weight on low carb, but at a good slow pace. Getting her back to the weight she should be could also help her getting regulated.

Hi Staci, thank you so much for checking in and your kind words!

Yes, Binie has thyroid issues. Last year in january she was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. We started a treatment with Felimazole but she got stomach issues from it. She was well with Thyronorm oral solution but my vet suggested she goes to Iodine treatment as she was not so old and well otherwise. It took me time and some sleepless nights to think about it but I wanted her to have the chance to be completely well again. I think it is different in the US but in Germany - due to radiation protection laws - this meant for her to sit isolated in a small room in the clinic for one week without any contact. She was very well directly after the treatment but unfortunately she developed hypothyroidism. We got the diagnose in december, one month before she was diagnosed with diabetes. After her iodine treatment in may she gained 1.5 kgs in only half a year without eating more - she even ate less. I think somehow that contributed to her diabetes. Since december she takes Thyroxavet and when we tested her again in january, she was already back in the normal but lower range. Her bloodwork is now really overdue but with all the other issues going on, that was not the main focus anymore. So I am really curious now, how her bloodwork turns out.

Hope you are having a relaxed day today and Ivy has a gentle circle tonight! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Wendy, thank you for sharing your experience! Yes, Binie really has to loose weight. Her body condition score is eight. She was never a slim cat as she was raised from her pre owners with kibble and I never managed to change that. So I tried to feed her at least kibble with lots of protein and no wheat inside but I was a fool to give the Royal Canine fibre response when she had constipation issues. Her hypothyroidism made it worse and she went from 5.5 kg to over 7 kg in 6 month. I really hope we can reverse that over time and maybe that has a positive impact on her bg. I read that even 10 % weight loss is changing a lot. We'll see if we manage. Last year I bought a small baby scale and every week she goes on it with a treat. That was the first time weighing her, when she was on her maximum weight. Now she is at least a little under 7 kg again.

Oh, I see. I didn’t know Binie had thyroid issues. I’m glad you were able to have the iodine treatment done and that she recovered quite well. That’s terrific news.
When I found out Ivy has hyperthyroid issues I looked into the iodine treatment, but none of the facilities would take her because she’s too difficult to handle, requires medication, including insulin injections and she wasn’t eating great when she was diagnosed. So, that was part of the problem that they would need to make sure she ate and they obviously couldn’t get close to her after the treatment. Everybody kind of told me she couldn’t have it so I put her on the methimazole.
I’m still hoping that she’ll be OK on this medication. We’re using the transdermal formulation on her ears twice a day.

We will have lab work done mid August so we’ll see what condition the thyroid and kidneys are showing at that point.

I hope you’ve had a good day, Heike and Binie :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Staci, I think here in Germany it would also not be possible to do iodine treatment for a diabetic cat, as the staff is not allowed to come close to the cat. I had to sign that they would not treat her, even in an emergency. It was very scary and I was so relieved, when I could pick her up. Knowing what I know today, the iodine treatment maybe was not the best option for Binie. Somehow I think, that the hypothyroism she developed after the treatment contributed to her getting diabetes. But that is all speculation. My vet also thinks that it may be one factor besides this stupid wound and maybe other factors, we don't know.

I know that many cats do very well on methimazole. I keep my fingers crossed, that Ivys next blood work shows good results! It is really not easy, to manage all these different issues and you are such a caring and amazing mum to Ivy! Hope you really get a good nights sleep tonight! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

You’re so sweet Heike.
I’m sorry to learn you think the thyroid situation caused the diabetes.
Such a shame. Everyone seems to really think the iodine is the best treatment. But they all turned us down. So I have no choice.

I just have to pray I can manage all these conditions simultaneously somehow for my girl.

We are doing the best we can, Heike. It’s so difficult to try to balance it all. I know you understand and are also doing all the hard work yourself, too.
Hugs to you and your girl :bighug::bighug::bighug:
