Day one. Chose SLGS. Doing it correctly?

Hello everyone,

I am so proud of my Jax, it went a lot smoother than I thought checking his glucose and doing his injection. It was a mess juggling everything together while trying to keep him still in front of me. Doesn’t help that I have damaged nerves in my dominant hand which causes constant shaking. But anyways.
We were able to accomplish both in the AM and PM. I finally figured out how to update my spreadsheet. I hope I am doing it correctly. Also, I chose the SLGS method. I feel that would work best for us both. I know it states to start him off at 1 unit. But since his numbers were in the 700s when he was diagnosed on the 3rd and the vet had me on 2 units for those two weeks that I don’t have the glucose meter. I figured I would start at 2 units.
So if I am understanding this method correctly, I do what I did today for about a week, and then do the blood glucose curve? And then go from there? I’m just hoping I am reading these instructions correctly.

Jax is also still on Purina DM. I made the decision to switch to Dr. Elseys clean protein rabbit and chicken. Yes I know that is still dry food. But the purina DM is still making his feces way too soft. So I’m going to slowly transition him onto the Dr. Elseys. I take it I should wait to perform the blood glucose curve AFTER I have switched his food completely? I’m just wanting to make sure I am going about this correctly.

Thank you all for the help! Doing this alone and with our current situation at home is tough but we are trying!

Right, but any time you can grab a test in between the shots is very useful information. We base dosing on how LOW it takes them, not the Pre-Shot so if you can get a test around +5 to +7 and one "before bed" on the PM cycle, it will really help to learn how Jax is responding to the 2U dose.

No...do the curve after a week....when you do start the transition to the Dr. Elsey's, his glucose could come down but it's important we know where he's at before you switch the food too (like if his BG are running a little low on the DM, we can expect it to go even lower on the low carb food so might need to reduce the dose sooner).

It's also possible his stools could remain soft or even get worse on the Dr. Elsey's. It's so rich that it causes a lot of cats to have gas and/or diarrhea so your plan to transition slowly is a very good idea. It may improve as he gets used to it (or it may not). Just want you to be prepared so in case his stools do get worse, you don't get too worried thinking there's something else wrong with him.

Thank you so much for replying so quickly. Okay, duly noted. I should be able to get the test done before bed. The other on the other hand will be tough due to work. But I’m almost thinking about taking off some more work to try and handle this.

Okay, perform the curve in one week. I will write that down. That makes sense now that I’ve read that.

Thank you for the information. I forgot to add the main reason for making that decision was the price of the purina and that I know the Dr. Elseys has less carbs than the purina food has. I still would like to try and transition him onto wet food diet. But I’m giving the Dr. Elseys a try first.
