Kit seems to have recovered quickly/gone back to her regular numbers by this morning, which I am very pleased to see. I'll be home this morning to keep an eye on her, and maybe actually nap a little.

It was a bit of a long night, and while diabetic related, not cat related. I mentioned late on yesterday's post - both my parents are also diabetic. They both use two different insulins - one fast acting with dinner and one slower at other times. Mom's dose is 5 units of fast acting at dinner and 45 units of slower acting before bed/sometime in the evening. Last night she accidentally mixed up which she was using and took 45 units of the fast acting insulin. That was at 830 their time last night.:facepalm:

By 1045 they were in the ER because she had dropped to 61, but had dropped to 52 by the time they got to the ER. A slight digression - they live in western Nebraska, but just happened to be in Lincoln Nebraska because my dad had cardiac tests on Monday (which ended up being 4 hours late because of dehydration and blood pressure issues), and it's far enough away that they had a hotel. Tuesday night mom ended up having a stomach bug that kept her up most of the night, so already a rough go.

So they get to the ER, she's given a sugar cocktail, then a glucose drip. The drip finishes around 1230am, but they want her to stay for an hour so they can check glucose an hour later. At the end of the drip she was at 116, but an hour later had dropped back to 82. I'm not sure if they did a second drip, but they didn't get back to the hotel until almost 4 am.

And now, because mom has decided that Lincoln is bad luck right now, they're driving home this morning, instead of trying to stay another night in the hotel and maybe get some sleep. Which is 4.5 hours away. So, that's a new worry for the morning. But thank goodness they were in Lincoln - my hometown doesn't have a hospital, and the nearest one is 45 minutes away. Lincoln's was definitely closer.

My mom definitely laughed at me last night after she told me what she'd done because I asked if she had a hypo kit or needed to borrow some of Kit's hi carb gravy. She declined. :joyful:

Oh my goodness!
That must have been really scary!
Glad mom was okay and thanks goodness they were in Lincoln!
Yes, they definitely needs to have a hypo kit.

:joyful::joyful::joyful: She just needs to add some salt and pepper to it :joyful::joyful::joyful:

Hope you can take it easy today to recover from the stress! Looks like Kit cat is cooperating.
Take a nap and read something fun. :bighug:

Wow, what an intense couple of days! I hope your dad and mom are both doing ok now. I’m sure you’ll breathe a lot easier once they’re home.

I once did something similar with my acrocat—he was on two types of insulin and I gave 25u of R because I was sleep deprived and grabbed the wrong bottle. That was one heck of a drive to the ER, stopping periodically to dump about 12cc of Karo in him at a time. From that point forward, the fast-acting vial of R lived in an amber-colored pill bottle in my fridge rather than the original box, so there was a distinct visual difference between the two insulin containers.

BTW, I’m impressed your mom told you what happened. :)

Yeah, it was definitely scary in the moment. I can't imagine how stressful it would be to have to constantly stop to give more Karo. That sleep deprivation is real, though. I'm hoping my folks will do something like color code their stuff now. Maybe I'll just send them a suggestion.

There are enough health issues in the whole family that we're all pretty good at sharing what's going on, which I am super grateful for. And dad was on point keeping us updated as things were happening. And I know they'll be equally happy to be home.

It was pretty scary. She was jokey at first but definitely seemed pretty tired and stressed when dad sent us a pic from the ER (he decided it was fair play since she had sent us a picture of him in a hospital gown on Monday lol).

Yes, they definitely needs to have a hypo kit.

:joyful::joyful::joyful: She just needs to add some salt and pepper to it :joyful::joyful::joyful:

They have a snack bag, and dad had soda for some sugar, but the hotel didn't have any juice on hand, and I'm hoping this leads to them being better prepared (although I'm not sure they could have avoided the ER with that accidental dose).

When they were here last summer I offered my dad some high carb food or to test his blood via ear pick, and he didn't go for it either. Just so unwilling to accept help. :p:joyful::joyful:[/QUOTE]

Wow, Alicia, I am so glad your parents are ok with that story. That must have been terrifying! I am sure you have so many great tips for them in handling this awful disease. It's so easy to see how one simple mistake can lead to a disaster.
Just so relieved your Mom is ok.
Sanding you hugs, too. I am sure your adrenaline was also coursing with their nightmare.

Thanks, Stacey. It started out with us all being a bit jokey, but then definitely got scary. And they're usually pretty good about handling it, I think they were just not as prepared as they could have been because they were in a hotel. And I'm glad mom actually went in - sometimes she argues with things like that. She's stubborn. It's where I get it.
They should be home in the next hour or so, and then I'll feel even better about it.

Update on the momther - the parents are home. While she was happy to be home, she was feeling tired and not amazing. Her numbers seem to be okay. Lunch didn't seem to sit well, she said, although there's not much on the drive home that isn't basically fast food without going further off the interstate.

Kit seems to be getting back to better numbers. I didn't lower the dose, but I'm going to have Eric work from home tomorrow morning and Friday morning (or all day if he wants). I have to go into work briefly before I leave for my appointment, which is an hour away, so I'll be leaving by +3.5 at the latest. I'll probably just carb her up in the mornings, and I think I'll be able to check her somewhere between +6 and +1 tomorrow and Friday.

Hi Alicia nice cycle today , happy to see those greens . I hope Kit has a nice dark green cycle tonight.
I'm glad to hear your Mom is ok :bighug::bighug::bighug::cat:
Thanks Diane. She seems to be hovering in low blues. We'll see if she comes down more. She may be doing a bit of bouncing from the weird pinks yesterday and the drop last night? Who knows with this girl.

Scary to hear about mom's experience, this last bit you noted was totally the comedic relief I needed. "I asked if she had a hypo kit or needed to borrow some of Kit's hi carb gravy. She declined. :joyful:" That is hilarious!

Good to see no pinks today for Kit. :bighug:

I probably go the "break the tension with a joke" route pretty often - I think it might be a family trait? :joyful:

I'm also glad to have seen no pinks. I'd have liked to see some greens tonight, but she's been so up and down the last few days, I shouldn't be too surprised. I hope Kona is doing well!

I guess parents are allowed to give their kids worrying moments like this since I'm sure we all did the same to our parents when we were kids (as I'm finding out with my own little ones, especially my boy!). Thank God everything went well!

Yeah, I was telling a friend that I wasn't thrilled that they drove the 4.5 hours back home the next morning instead of sticking around to get some rest. But I would also do the same thing they did in that situation, so I gueeeeessssss I can't be toooooo annoyed about it. :joyful::joyful:
I think mom has decided since we gave her so many gray hairs she can return the favor?:joyful:
