I checked Tessa a little early this month and was very sad to see that her BG is running higher than usual. I tested her multiple times yesterday and never got a reading below 100. Tested her again this morning and got 128. :(

I know that she needs a teeth cleaning and I'm hoping that's causing the elevated numbers because then they'd likely go back down after the cleaning, right? I'm not sure when I can get her in for a cleaning but I will do it as soon as possible.

Should I consider putting her back on insulin? I thought that her insulin expired in December 2024 but I just checked and it expired in December 2023 so if she needs to go back on, I'll have to buy a fresh supply which I'm willing to do but I'm not sure if the prescription is still valid.

There's a small possibility that Tessa is sneaking her sister's higher carb food but I don't think that's the case because she thinks she can't make the jump to where her sister's food is kept. She did manage to pull the bowl down once by standing on the platform below and reaching up to drag the bowl down but we blocked off the platform below so she would have to jump up there to access the bowl. Plus, there was food left in her sister's food bowl both mornings and Tessa would never allow that if she access to it, lol. That girl licks her bowls CLEAN.

Need of a dental is I think the number one reason cats fall out of remission. It’s good you will get that done asap. Can you test 2-3 hours after eating to see if the bg comes down? I’d keep monitoring and see when you can get the dental. I’ll tag a few others. @Wendy&Neko @Marje and Gracie @Bandit's Mom

I tested at +8 yesterday which would have been 4 hours after a meal (she uses a timed feeder and eats every 4 hours). I can test at +3 today (about 1 hour from now) to see how things are looking today.

I agree with Elise, monitor for a few days and see if she brings the BG down after food, or if her numbers trend higher.

Make sure you book a dental with a vet that will do dental x-rays first. Often there are issues below the gum line that a vet can't see by visual exam. Neko had one of those.

Thanks! My vet always does x-rays with dental appointments thankfully.

Just tested her 3 hours post morning meal and it was 150. :( Hoping the vet can get us in quick for a dental. I'm also going to ask about getting insulin to have on hand just in case.

Thankfully there are a lot of cheaper options around now for insulin.
Sourcing Insulin More Economically

Wow, yeah $35 is WAYYY cheaper than what we paid back in 2022. We paid $122 for 5 pens last time and that was WITH a GoodRx coupon and we got the runaround from the pharmacy. It took my husband several hours to finally get the insulin at the correct price but even if we have to pay more it's worth it to keep Tessa healthy.

Tessa's numbers came down a bit. She's at 116 right now. She followed a similar pattern yesterday of having higher numbers during the day that settled to a lower (but still too high) number by the evening. I wonder what would cause that to happen?

Her pancreas is trying.

Yeah, I was just wondering why her BG is higher in the morning than at night but I think I realized why. She gets larger meals overnight. She gets 1 Fancy Feast can split into 3 meals during the day and 1.5 cans split into 3 meals at night so the larger meals might be why her BG is higher in the morning than at night. I'll try to get some evening +3s this week and see what those look like compared to the daytime +3s. I bet they're higher from the extra food.

She has a cleaning scheduled on Thursday. Hopefully that will get her numbers to come down. I'm kicking myself for not getting the cleaning done earlier, she had a checkup last month and the vet said she had some gingivitis but it wasn't too bad yet. I intended to get her scheduled soon after that but I forgot and I feel terrible about it. :(
