Yesterday afternoon Ivy decided to break her very flat yellow bounce and produce nice greens (checked on Contour).

We held her dose at 4 units due to the lows and greens and low for her Pmps she had of 63 on the Libre. :D

Question:
I’m wondering if her Contour Next meter reads higher than other meters.
I’ve noticed some other Libre users when they check against their handheld meters the readings are not too far apart, like under 10-15 points (when Libre reads low).
My Contour meter can be 40 to 50 points (or even more) higher.
(I actually have 2 Contours and they both read the same).
I like the meter and it takes less blood to get a reading.
So if I want to get another meter, what should I try (that needs less blood)
Then if I get a meter that reads much closer to the Libre, which meter do I believe (the Contour or a new handheld meter for blood checks?)
Or do I just stick with Contour and go with the higher readings for dosing decisions??

I’ve seen the True Metrix Go and Accu Check (not sure which model) mentioned as what the Libre users are using. @Jennifer & Oliver

I tried the Relion Premier when I first began and it took too much blood and I never could get readings so I abandoned that meter.

Any thoughts? Thanks :)

Hope you all have a safe surfing day :cat:

I have both the Relion and True Metrix. I feel like the True Metrix needs a tiny bit more blood than the Relion but believe it's pretty close. My Relion seems to read a little bit less than my True Metrix. True Metrix test strips are less expensive.

Good morning Staci.
Ivy is really doing so well with this dose. Her progress is remarkable :)
I don't know much about Contour Next.
For human use, I have heard that Contour Next tends to read higher when the BG is in the normal range.
Sounds like this may be what's happening with Ivy's case tool
I use Freestyle Lite and also Freestyle Freedom Lite as a back up and reliability check.
They both use a tiny amount of blood and I rarely have trouble testing Mikan.
Maybe to try?;)

Hope your day will be fun but relaxed and calm! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Kit, thanks for letting me know about your meters. If I switch I definitely need one that needs less blood. I can’t have a meter constantly giving me error messages for not enough blood :banghead:

Ivy surprised me yesterday with her low drops and her low Pmps. But in a good way!

I hope you both have a great day, too :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Good meowning Staci and Ivy!

Looks like she's on a mission again. Hopefully nothing too dramatic and she settles on the beach with Nestle.
Have a peaceful and nice day.

Hi Staci!
I have both the Relion and the CVS advanced. The CVS needs very little blood, a tiny drop, maybe even slightly less than the Relion.
They seem to be similar for testing, but I did not really try to compare them, I just keep the Relion as back up in case I run out of strips.

Thanks for the information, Cecile!! :bighug::bighug:

I had a Contour among my many meters and it ran a little higher than my One Touch Mini (my favorite and most accurate meter but strips were more expensive) and my ReliOn Prime mini which required a tiny drop of blood but they don’t make the meter anymore:banghead:.

My question is this….how would I “decide” which meter to use as the “accurate” one if I choose a meter which reads lower??

Yes I use the True Metrix Go and it uses a small drop of blood. The strips are also inexpensive. I did it the other day and the handheld was <10 higher then the libre. I also find that if I'm getting a lot of sensor errors on the libre especially in the second week that it's nearing the end and the readings aren't always reliable. It's at that point that I can replace the libre sensor or i can start using the handheld and then have abbot replace the sensor when it dies before 14 days. Really depends on what is a priority for me at the time. Sometimes I just know that Oliver isn't going to tolerate having his ear pricked several times a day.

Did you buy it locally or online and can you get the strips locally or just online? (I'd like to find locally so I know I can get in a pinch if needed) but also online...with planning.

What kind of sensor errors are you getting? (10 minute warning? It's common if BG is going up or down quickly)
You can check the Event Log to see what codes you get.
Or if they are out of range of the phone, you will get beeping to alert you no readings.

Yes Abbott will replace if it stops working early or has big gaps in your chart due to readings being unavailable. Just never tell them it's for a cat. :)

@Staci & Ivy Yes I purchased everything online. Didn't even think about buying them locally. I'm just going to have to keep a couple back-up strips so I don't run out. If you decide to switch to this meter you can always keep the contour on hand in case you do run out.

Disclaimer: you won’t like what I say ;)

First, the Contour is a very good meter and many members, in the past, used it. It wasn’t because it was inaccurate that more members shifted to the ReliOns; it was because strips were cheaper. For me, personally, even though it read higher than my other meters by a little, I didn’t prefer it because I didn’t like the shape and heft of it.

Second, you can’t compare your readings between the Contour and Libre with other members’ readings between their handheld and Libre. Each meter has a variance of 20% within its own readings so comparing to other meters is an exercise in futility. Putting on my scientist hat as well, to make solid conclusions, you must have much more data than you have now. You also have other differentials at play which can influence the readings and that includes the Libre…perhaps it is the way the Libre works with Ivy’s physiology, perhaps it’s the placement…..who knows?

Third, I would wager if you were only using the Contour, you wouldn’t question the readings. Yes, over the years we’ve seen some meters (the old Freestyle Lite meters were notoriously & falsely low all the time) which, in general, were not recommended but the Contour has never been one of them.

IMHO, pick a handheld that you like the looks and feel of, draws the least amount of blood and does it reliably, and fits your budget and stick with it. Whether that is the Contour you now have or another type, that’s up to you. Try not to compare what others get between their handhelds & their Libres.

Forgive me?:nailbiting:

I appreciate your scientific analysis on this.
All the discussion just made me start thinking (and giving myself yet one more problem to ponder. It’s a “me” problem)

I just wondered why other meters were so much more in line with the Libre numbers and my meter is so reliably higher (when she hits lows on the Libre). All of which I’m accustomed to. But I just didn’t want to be overdosing her in some way.

I will stick with the Contour, which I do like, can afford and takes less blood, which is the most important factor for me and Ivy.
Thanks for the great
Explanation, as always, Marje!

It’s a “me” problem)
;)sometimes we are our own worst enemy when it comes to analyzing and worrying. It’s human nature.

And remember, you are only looking at half the data on the Contour as you don’t test high BGs and you don’t test every Lo. I completely understand why but you’d have to have that data to really make conclusions. There is also a lag between the data the Libre is giving since it’s not testing the blood & the info the Contour is giving off the blood sample.

Another example is using the AT vs a human meter. Sometimes the BGs are really far apart even at lower numbers & sometimes closer together. That’s why we tell AT users that once they switch to a human meter, don’t compare readings.

Hi stacy I used the one touch prior to the countor, I needed a lot of blood drop and only had one fill opportunity... with the contour you have two fill options and the blood drop is smaller. The only problem I have had is that when my glucose drops below 50 it sometimes gives a lot of errors and you have to use several strips. I hope you find my personal advice helpful
