Yay, back to greens!

Some complicated news here... first, Ariel's dental today got postponed. I mentioned to the vet that she hasn't been grooming her back end recently (and was already having trouble getting up on things like the bed and kitchen chairs). She did x-rays and found some issues with the lumbar vertebrae/discs. So we did an anti-inflammatory injection (Onsior) and will do a couple of days of Onsior at home, and see how she does. Dental is rescheduled for next month.

Meanwhile, since Ariel's dental cleaning didn't happen I asked if the vet could squeeze in Oberon today instead of Friday, and she could. There's some gum inflammation where his lower canines are hitting his upper lip, which could be the issue, or he could possibly have some acid reflux. The vet could feel something in his abdomen that she wasn't positive was just poop, so we did an x-ray. (Spoiler alert! It was just poop.) But the x-ray also showed a small aberration/mass on his lung that was definitely not there in an older x-ray. So now we need to figure out what that is. The plan is to hit it with antibiotics (clindamycin) plus a tapering prednisolone dose for 10 days, then redo the x-ray and evaluate next moves from there. She was hesitant to do the steroid because of his FD but I said that if he really needed it we could do it, and if it messed with his glucose we would just monitor and adjust his dose as needed. Hoping that isn't a bad idea. Fingers and paws crossed that it's a small infection or benign mass. I don't like the other possibility.

So... opinions/options for dealing with a short steroid course? (It's 2.5 mg twice a day for five days, then daily for 5 days, then every other day for 5 days.) Do I stick with the TR protocol, or are there other adjustments to make?

Sorry to hear the bad vet news for both Ariel and Oberon. :bighug: Did the vet talk about Solensia for Ariel?

You know that Clindamycin is hard stuff, Oberon will definitely need a strong probiotic with that. As far as the pred goes, you are right. Just change the dose as TR tells you to do with the numbers you see. Some caregivers will notice a pattern when the numbers rise - ie. it's may not be a 24 hours thing. That can be used to advantage to dose the pred either in the PM or AM if you want to sleep or work without worrying. Though not sure if 10 days will be enough to see a pattern. The pred dose is pretty low, not sure why twice a day, or if the impact will be that noticeable.

She said we could look at either daily gabapentin or Solensia. She said it's new in the US but very effective.

I've got probiotics on hand, so we'll start that soon. Waiting to start the meds until tomorrow so we're awake and around if he reacts badly for some reason. (Not expecting it, but just in case...)
