Bella has just had her first green number ever in the past 3 weeks of her diagnosis. Her BG reading is 71 and we need to leave the house. We just fed her a little food but I’m unsure of how many carbs is in it because it’s not on the cat composition list. We gave her FF tender turkey pate in broth (it’s those petites) we gave her half of a half so like 2 TBSP.

I’m just a little nervous because this is a number we never got before and we both need to leave to go somewhere and I’m nervous.

That's quite a drop from PS to +3. Do you have any higher carb food? In gravy? Do you have to leave right away?

Please give her a tsp of food with gravy.
How long will you be gone for? Will she eat if you leave food out for her?

Just checked it again and it’s 70 (15 mins after) we’re giving her a little now with the gravy. I’m so nervous
Food takes 20 mins to affect numbers. It's good that she hasn't dropped further. A little higher carb food should keep her safe. And also leave out some of her regular food for her to eat.

I decided to stay home for a little so I can check her again in 20 mins. I can’t leave her knowing it’s low. Where I have to go can wait until she has safer numbers. Does this affect how much insulin I give her tonight? What does this mean because yesterday she had a 407 reading (which she’s never had) and was in the 200-300s the rest of the day.

You're asking all of the right questions!

When I have been in a similar situation, I would either adjust my plans of give a larger than usual amount of high carb food to make sure my cat was safe. Since Bella's numbers warranted a dose reduction for tonight, there's no reason to not be a bit excessive with the high carb food if you need to go out.

One of the things that helped me to quiet my nerves was a timed feeder. If you need to make sure Bella stays in a safe range if you're gone, a feeder is very helpful.

Since you are following the SLGS dosing method she has earned a reduction by dropping below 90. You would go down to 0.5U from tonight.

and I should stay at 0.5 until her numbers consistently go up again? (If they do). I cant do another curve until next weekend.

we are going to get one especially when my husband goes back to work (he’s recovering from an injury) where we have to go isn’t far. The low BG is making me hopeful that we’re on the right track to remission.

i just checked again and it was 20 mins after HC food and it’s 69.

So her BG is 69 it’s not dropping fast but it’s still going down and I will have to leave for a little and then I can come back in like an hour or so before I go back out. Should I give her a little more or the food with gravy before I leave?

The tests are essentially all the same -- there's up to a 20% allowance for measurement error. And yes, you can load her up with high carb.

While I don't want to rain on your optimism, it's been only 3 weeks since Bella was diagnosed. Please don't put pressure on yourself regarding remission. While some cats break records when it comes to getting back to normal numbers, it's usually a process that can take months. We've had cats that took 3 years for them to get to remission (which is a "never lose hope" scenario).

I got excited to see the lower number and I understand remission takes times. I’m just hopeful, I’ve suffered with diabetes for almost 20 years and I know it’s a roller coaster. Took me years to finally be a controlled regulated diabetic. All I care about is that she’s doing good, her BGs are going in the right direction to be regulated. Thank you for all your help
