2/24 Angel AMPS 212, +4 214, +8 130, +11.5 49/45, +12 56, +13/PMPS 90, +2 119

Whelp, Angel just threw me a curveball.

I'd like to move my shot schedule forward an hour, so I tested 35 minutes earlier tonight with the intent to shoot 30 minutes earlier (so 11.5 hours after AM shot). Not that it should make this much of a difference, haha.

I got the 49, thought maybe it was a faulty reading so immediately tested again and got the 45.

I assume this is a skip number right? Or just stall and see where she's at in 30 minutes at actual PMPS time?

And btw, can anyone explain that drop to me? Like, is there any explanation other than she's still producing some of her own insulin? She's not ill, eating like normal, ate a bunch even after that +8.

A number that is under 50 is not a number you can shoot. I'd suggest waiting until your usual PMPS and see where the numbers are. Keep in mind, that you also need to reduce Angel's dose to 3.25u.

With a low preshot number you can:
  • skip the shot
  • stall WITHOUT FEEDING. Re-test every 15 - 20 min and if numbers are consistently rising and are above 50 (or where you're more comfortable shooting), give insulin
  • give a token, reduced dose of insulin this one time
The token dose is different from the new, reduced insulin dose.

This is the sticky on dealing with low pre-shot numbers.

40 minutes later (so 10 minutes after usual PMPS) she's at 56, but I did feed her after the 45/49. Dumb in hindsight, I just went into "is low, must feed" mode. The lowest preshot I've shot on lantus is 77.

About the reduction, does Angel count as a long-term diabetic already? Diagnosed nearly a year ago now:

TR protocol:
If kitty drops below 40 (long term diabetic) or 50 (newly diagnosed diabetic) reduce the dose by 0.25 unit.

Stalled until +1/+13, she was at 90 by then so I felt comfortable shooting.

I ended up giving 3.25 just to be safe. However, should she actually get a reduction or does she count as a long term diabetic with reductions only if she goes below 40?

I'll stay up for another 2 hours at least to get a +2, so I'll be around.

Lisa --

Was Angel diagnosed in November or in April? I'm in the US and read the diagnosis as November. It looks like from your spreadsheet, you're using US notation. Christy read the diagnosis date as April given that you're in The Netherlands. It also looks like your spreadsheet begins in April. I'm confused. Please make sure that the notation is clear so we don't make a mistake. FYI - we consider a "long term" diabetic as a kitty that is over a year past diagnosis. Either way, you needed to take the dose reduction.

You know your cat so this may not apply. In general, the +2 is close to your pre-shot test number. Nadir is around mid-cycle. Angel's numbers could have dropped further. If it were me, I would have gotten a +3 to see if her numbers were going down or if she was going to bounce.
