Hi Lara, Luciole is quite the handsome fellow as well. I love black cats! What are you feeding Luciole out of curiosity? I always find the food selection here is different in Canada.:cat:

Hello Nadine!

I started Luciole on Fancy Feast, which many of the members here use because the pates (and only the pates) are low carb. However, to be on the safe side, because of some recent complaints against a variety of pet foods, which Marje helpfully mentioned, I now avoid it.

I'm now giving Lu some of the Nulo Pates, specifically:
* Duck & Tuna
* Chicken & Turkey
* Lamb & Beef
* Trout & Salmon

I also have some Almo Nature food, although it is not a complete diet, but it's something I give her only occasionally. Although they're called a pate, they aren't. These foods are very liquidy, and I even blend the Chicken & Pumpkin pate in my blender, to make a smoothie for her. They were very helpful when she was first diagnosed, which was only 3 weeks ago.
* Tuna & Shrimp pate
* Chicken & Pumpkin pate

I also have some freeze-dried food for her, and I often chop this up and put it on her food as a topper:

I get this from Home Alive Pets, as they have great shipping.

I had to stop giving Lu her beloved Temptations cat treats, although she occasionally gets a Smart Bite or a Feline Greenie, but this is rare, as they are little carb bombs.
So I had to find alternative treats. Lu isn't all that thrilled about free-dried chicken breast, but she loves freshly chopped up chicken hearts.

She isn't yet keen about a completely raw diet (I use the mix from Feline Future, and my other cats like it, and I'm a long-time raw feeder and actually prefer their original recipe, where you source all your own supplements), but she likes bits of raw meat, so as long as I'm working them in with a balanced low carb diet, we're both happy.

And all my cats get no-salt-added tuna in spring water, and sardines in spring water, as an occasional treat.

I hope that's helpful, and feel free to let me know if you have any other questions. There are a lot of knowledgeable people here.

And, most importantly:
* No dry food. It's loaded with carbs, and is the most unnatural junk food for cats. Kitties end up with a lot of health issues from it. And there have been a lot of recalls because of contamminated ingredients.
* No vet foods. They're "big pharma" for pets, and not of quality ingredients.

My Theodore loves LOVES LOVES almo. I think there's an ALMO complete? Curious what's wrong with Fancy Feast Pates? I was giving this to Theo since Pates work well as he has only one fang left. My vet wants him off the Fancy Feast as he has protein in urine.... She's suggesting a diet switch which is why I am thinking about my options. The thing is ALMO is not really great for him as it's not a pate

***Edit****

Thanks for sharing the link, I didn't notice it on my phone regarding the pet food issues

Almo Complete isn't "complete" in any way. That's just advertising weasel words. It isn't a complete diet. If you do a search here, you'll see discussions pointing out why the food is just for occasional feeding, and would lead to deficiencies if fed all the time.

Get advice about diet from members here, who have a great deal of combined and accumulated knowledge about issues similar to your cat's. Your vet can have urinalysis and bloodwork done that point out the issues, but will likely not have great food recommendations, and will try to push veterinary diets (take a look at the mountains of vet foods they have.) That's because the get their "education" (these are quotation marks of derision) from the pet food industry, who will give them a day's training at best, saying, "Trust us, this is our specialty and we know best." Most vets are not nutritionists, even though they mean well. That's sad, because diet is largely the foundation for health.

Well said, I will take a look for recommendations here on diet. I'm really struggling. I give Dr. Esleys dry (only because he gets constipated when I remove the dry, which I know goes against what the text book says but this has happened to me several times when trying to remove the dry and cost me lots of money for vet visits. I also give Fancy Feast Pate. Due to his recently diagnosis with protein in urine I have been looking for better dietary options, I did order Young Again to give it a last ditch effort as he previously rejected it. His diet is about 80% wet, 20% dry. I like the PureBites dry freeze food as a topper. He loves it. For treats I give Theodore the Churro wet treats in a tube. He loves this and I put his meds in it without any issue. They are also fine for diabetic cats to my understanding.

Fancy Feast are pretty high in phosphorus, which is something you want to avoid if you have a cat with kidney disease. Proteinuria can be an early indicator of kidney disease.

And yes, there are a few Almo complete flavours. I don't know what the carb level is, though the ingredients don't look full of carbs.

Good to know, thank you @Wendy&Neko. Is there a food you would recommend? I looked at the video so I am just looking at options on the cat info sheet. We tried Hounds and Gatos the last few days and I am sad to report it's not a winner. His last poop before today was Friday, he was straining today and ended up needing an enema which I did for him in the morning. We were going a year strong without enemas prior to this. :( I bought young again to mix into Dr. Esleys to give it another go for the dry portion but he doesn't have much dry in general.

I don't really have a food I'd recommend. It depends on what the cat will eat and if there are food allergies. If you look at the CKD Diabetes list, there are low phosphorus and low carb foods listed. I've seen the majority of them in Canada. I fed Neko raw food, some premanufactured, and some I made with the TC Feline or EZComplete premix.

Thanks Wendy, I'm a little scared to do raw. I think I will continue with Fancy Feast and see how Benzapril works for him. We had a tough day today with the enema so I just wanna leave things status quo until we redo bloodwork to see if benzapril is causing kidney harm.

I wasn't suggesting you do raw, just telling you what I fed. Neko also got some Weruva for HC. I also had to change things up a bit when soft tissue growth in her mouth made it hard for her to eat raw her last year. I did some canned foods then. This was also quite a few years ago, and pet food options change over time.

@Wendy&Neko Thank you, definitely appreciate the feedback. I am definitely looking at the list and thinking of what I can try. I'm just so scared as he has other issues and everything that might seem minor throws off all the others. It's definitely challenging. Today's been exhausting. Enemas are no fun.
