Tweety had a rough morning. I am now home from work.

Why does glucose drop like crazy for no reason at all? No changes in anything - not food not dose - nothing.

5:50 Breakfast Fancy Feast Beef Classic
Libre 168

7:19 Worry snack 1/2 Fancy Feast Gem Tuna
Libre 90

7:43 Panic snack Purina Kibble 1/4 cup or so plus
Libre 60

7:51 Glucometer LOW
7:52 Glucometer 116
7:53 Glucometer LOW
7:55 Libre 126
10:14 Libre 221
12:25 Libre 410 :(

410 is high number for midday which makes me so sad. We just could not risk a hypo with no one home situation. Last time she went hypo (under 40) she did not climb this fast and we sure gave her much more food and honey when she was under 40.

Now I am worried and sad she will get really high and her shot is not for 5 hours. :(

Anyone able to shed light on seeming "out of nowhere" deep drops with NO changes to food or dose?

Tweety was breaking a bounce overnight. The signs to look for is a high preshot and then the numbers sliding down all the rest of the cycle, ending in that nice blue AMPS. When there is a bounce breaking cycle, there can be some extra downward momentum in the numbers that can carry into the next cycle. Which is why we suggest never doing a dose increase on a bounce breaking cycle.

Unfortunately one of the penalties of using dry food is that it lasts longer in the system. But those higher numbers are temporary, and you kept Tweety safe.
7:51 Glucometer LOW
7:52 Glucometer 116
7:53 Glucometer LOW
That is really odd, I'm glad you retested the glucometer again I suspect that the first and third tests might not have had enough blood. That can result in getting "Lo" readings. The Libre was reading 60 not long before that. I know @Staci & Ivy has found that the Libre shows lower than the handheld meter too.

Tweety has earned a dose reduction down to 1.0 units. Good luck with the new dose.

Hi Wendy, I will try to find more threads/posts its on the Bouncing. Last night she was not high preshot. But she just kept getting lower overnight which is super weird. I am so worried as this feels out of the blue to me. I will try to understand the bouncing trends and what to watch for. It is normal for Tweety to be around 300 at shot time. So I just don't get it.

On 2/2 we went to 1.5u with syringe (previously only used pen/pen needles)

On 2/4 I took her back to 1.25 as she was dramatically dropping

She has been on 1.25 since... so I just don't get it.

Crazy that her vet on Tuesday 2/6 wanted to take her to 2u.

You said I should take her to 1 unit now...but I am not understanding why? I thought we had to stay at the dose/stay the course for 7 days? Or do you always go down if they go hypo? I bet tonight she will be near 400. Although she did just drop to 359.

Thank you for bearing with me. Just when I feel like I am getting it and things are good? I feel deflated.

GOOD news? Tweety is playful and booting around with the strings and toys for a bit. Go figure. Mom here is panicking and she is having a great time. I would much rather this be the case though! :)

Here is the section in the Dosing Methods Sticky Note about SLGS, emphasis is mine:

Hold the dose for at least a week:
  • Unless your cat won’t eat or you suspect hypoglycemia
  • Unless your kitty falls below 90 mg/dL (5 mmol/L). If kitty falls below 90 mg/dL (5 mmol/L) decrease the dose by 0.25 unit immediately.
Bottom line, you don't want to keep her on a dose that will take her that low again if you were to stay on it.

Love hearing that Tweety is feeling good. :)

It is good to see her playful... seriously. As stressful as this day has been feeling, to see her playing and numbers going down from 410 from all those carbs is helping me feel less insane. This board is amazing. Thank you for all of your help. I was sifting through her graphs and did not yet get to the post its. I am going to read again. Maybe even print things out. Especially is she gets low/goes towards hypo again. Highly doubtful on 1u though. I bought Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers an hour ago to have on hand in lieu of kibble just in case though.

Ok I am rambling. Time for this nutty feeling momma to go take a hot bath! It is clammy here in MN! (((((((((( THANK YOU ))))))))))))) :bighug::)

Update: Tweetys numbers were in the 400s but started coming down before PMPS reading. She was feeling playful but had since gotten tired and not hungry.

PMPS She was at 352 and barely wanted to eat as we gave her way too much this morning. I lowered to 1u. I'll try again in 2 hours to give more food. She has an upset stomach and I feel terrible. I'm trying so hard. Been in tears off and on this afternoon. Feeling defeated.

Does it usually take your kitty a day or two to mellow after an event like this? I think it took Tweety a few days but I'm hoping not. She was doing so great!

I'm worried about tonight. Glad I'll be home all weekend.

Over time you will learn how carb sensitive she is and how much you need to feed. It takes time, data and experiments. I started out giving Neko quite high HC, but it boosted her 80 points and that's way too much. So over time I learned that a low HC (16-17%) is what she needed. Unless under 40 when the syrup came out. Some cats aren't carb sensitive at all and need to have 20-25% carbs. ECID - each cat is different. Your job is to learn Tweety's reaction to food.

The more times you see lower numbers, you'll get those opportunities to learn. Speaking of data being your friend, you should write in the Remarks column how much of what you gave and when. Then next time you see lower numbers you'll see what you gave, and whether it was too much or too little.

The high numbers may also be why she is feeling tired - a sugar overload. When the bounce numbers lower down, she might perk up.

As for upset tummy, that's another reason it's important to note what food you give for HC. Again through experiments, I discovered Neko had an intolerance for gluten and wheat flour is in many of the HC food. I had to find HC that used potato starch instead.

She was perky this morning and ate normally like nothing happened. AMPS was high though at 399.

There so much to learn. It's intense. I don't know what to watch for. I looked back and so do not see how this happened at all. I just feel like at any moment anything can happen and it's unsettling more than ever how that I'm not working from home anymore. How am I going to do this. Maybe the Freestyle 3 will help. I'm going to get it on her tomorrow. I need a day to breathe.
