FACT 1 - QUESTION 1: Rico had a pretty tough day yesterday morning. He was taken to the vet and had his annual vaccination + the monthly Convenia shot (for his dental inflammation) + a microchip implant. The vet found his liver results (ALT) are high as well as his TP & MCV. Could someone have a look at his lab test results on his SS? Could his liver be affected because of too much protein? Should I change any of his foods? (The vet said it might be because of the Depot Medrol shot he got 2 weeks ago.)

FACT 2 - QUESTION 2: After our visit to the vet Rico was lethargic and refused to eat all day and all night until 6:00 am today. His BG went very low for the first time ever (55) and still seems tired and walks with difficulty. He has only eaten twice (I had to force him to) so far. He is on his 10th cycle of the TR and I am supposed to increase his dose tomorrow morning. Please, have a look at his SS and let me know if I can I keep it as it is for two more cycles or if I should give him the +0.25...

First, don’t increase after that investing of green. I’d give it a few more cycles to see what he has planned. Looks like he’s bouncing today.


Max often got like that after a vet visit but he had chronic pancreatitis so the stress caused an episode. He’d go in with low numbers and bounce.

I’m going to look at your labs and see if anything sticks out to me.

The TP is barely over and I’m sure he was not fasted. That can vary. It has with my cats and the next test was back down. The ALT unless more than double the high is not a concern according to my vet. I’d just keep an eye on it. Was this done in house? If so not as reliable as when sent to the lab but again these are so minor I would not worry. I would not change the food. Eating protein will not raise the TP as far as I know. If very high which it’s not you would want to look for the cause.

I am sure others will respond.

I think Rico does need his increase, but it's OK if you want to wait another day until he's feeling better to do it.

Steroids can increase liver numbers. As can mishandling of the blood sample. If the vet is worried, they may suggest a repeat blood work in a couple weeks to see if it stays high. It's not a too much protein issue. TP numbers look normal for him.

Thank you! No the tests were done at the vet clinic. His food is mainly Animonda and semi-raw chicken or turkey. What do you mean by "keeping an eye"? What should alert me?

I'm VERY worried because he's just lying there - not his usual jolly evening type. I'm meeting a dental specialist tomorrow - can I keep the cycle until his dental procedures are done?

Is there sommething I can do (in terms of food or supplements) to help him lower the liver numbers? I also give him salmon oil once a day - is this helping him or not?

There are but my vet never does anything based upon one set of labs. I hate to see it but it sounds to me like it could be pancreatitis. Lethargic, not eating, just not right are common symptoms. It’s just a guess but coming on quickly right after a vet visit I would see if he improves today and if not call your vet in the morning. Obviously if he starts to get worse you might need to be seen sooner.

Would it happen overnight? He's been like that only after the vet visit. I prefer to think that it's temperature or a side-effect because of the vaccination or the microchip. Because he's limbing as well... (fingers crossed!)

It sounds like he’s had Convenia before but there are side effects from it and it stays in the body for more than a month so I’m not sure why he’s getting it monthly.

The primary side effects reported with Convenia injections in cats and dogs are vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and decreased appetite. These side effects are uncommon, similar to the incidence rates of other antibiotics. Zoetis takes its responsibility to collect information on side effects very seriously.

I bet Convenia is the cause.

Our vet said that Convenia lasts for 2-3 weeks only. Thank God, his BG is low enough to take care of his dental infection and give up on Convenia!
 
Which vaccinations did he get? I've had cats go quiet and just lie there from them, especially rabies. It that's what it is, he might be fine in the morning.

Yes and Yes! One of the vaccines was for rabies and he seemed much better this morning. He asked for food but then vomitted (BG 512). I gave him some time to get hungrier and fed him again after the +6 (BG 135) and devoured everything! :)
