First Spreadsheet for Kenshi 2024

Thank you all who responded past few days as I tried to get sorted. Still trying to get a handle on how things work, so forgive me if I am in the wrong place etc. I have already learned quite a bit and am grateful for this resource.

Vet visit tomorrow to actually sit down and discuss the past two weeks. Hoping to share the sheet you helped me create. Basic background, she was stable at 1 unit am/pm from July through Nov when we stopped treatment (vet thought remission). She got quite sick in the following weeks and we re-started treatment January 10th at 2 units am/pm post bloodwork. We use a Libre, which we typically keep on until vet approves curve and then do again in a month. This time we kept it on the full two weeks, and that led to us noticing erratic readings, panic, changes in doses and basic chaos. Tomorrow we hope to sit down and regroup.

Some questions I have ready for the vet, based on what I have read here:
- Strip testing, we havent been doing this and want to know how to work it in (we already bought an iPetPro, after no luck at walmart)
- Get copies of her lab work
- She seems at her most normal when the readings are low, and she only seems sick when they get above 400 - how accurate are the low readings?
- Discuss feeding schedule/options (she is on kidney care prescription food)

Anything I am missing?

You might want to read all the yellow stickys on the lantus site, especially the 2 dosing methods to choose . They will tell you when an increase or decrease is needed

I have a couple of thoughts.

If you haven't had a chance to read the sticky notes at the top of the Lantus board, you may want to do so. In particular, I'd encourage you to take a look at the note regarding dosing methods. There are two approaches to dosing that we use for Lantus/glargine -- Tight Regulation (TR) and Start Low Go Slow (SLGS). From what it looks like, you're not following a method. These approaches differ with regard to when you reduce the dose (numbers below 50 with TR and below 90 with SLGS). Unless a dose reduction is indicated, the length of time you hold the dose in order to evaluate its effectiveness also differs (3 days with TR and a week with SLGS).

Lantus likes consistency. If you are adjusting the dose in less than 3 days, you do not give the insulin depot a chance to stabilize. One of the differences between Lantus and several of the other insulins is that it is a depot-type of insulin. It's what give it a more gentle and long-acting duration.

BTW, what are you considering to be "low" numbers. The numbers in the 40s definitely qualify. Keep in mind that normal range is 50 - 120.

The Libre tends to not be as accurate in lower ranges. There are several members who will test with a hand held meter if they are seeing numbers below 90 on the Libre.

I would take a look at the carbohydrate amount in the kidney diet. It tends to be quite high in carbs. There may be other options or ways to manage Kenshi's food. Do you know what stage her kidney disease is at?
