Do you test before each injection of insulin?

Hi all, Tweety has a Freestyle Libre on for a about 12 more days.

From there though... I am wondering do you all test before each shot? I have a glucometer, I am just unsure how realistic that is with only one person around most of the time.

I guess I could keep getting these, but that seems like a lot as well. We are newer to this whole thing and still learning. Thank you

Hi yes you definitely need to test before each shot to be sure Tweety's BG number is safe to give the insulin.Same goes for the night cycle.

It would be very helpful if you can set up your signature and spreadsheet
This blue link will tell you how to do both.
If you need help setting up your spreadsheet just ask, we can have a member help you with that
Here is a link helping us to help you link. If you noticed, our members have some basic information about their cat's in their signature. This helps us to not pester you by asking the same questions (your cat's name, insulin type, date of diagnosis, etc.) repeatedly. We also have a link to our spreadsheet in our signature. We are very numbers driven. The spreadsheet is a record of your cat's progress. By linking it in your signature, we can follow along and provide feedback should you need the help

Do you see mine below at the end of my post?

Do you have a human meter or a pet meter?

Tap on this blue link and look at post #5 about testing

Yes, I have to get that sheet done... I will aim to do so this weekend. I have a pet one... thankfully. I just have no idea how to do it alone. I will figure it out. Someone else just said they do it all the time. Wow this is a lot of stuff and stressful. Hopefully it gets easier and routine.

If you can't figure just ask I can ask someone to help you :cat:
Once you get used to everything believe me it will get easier

I managed Gabby's diabetes as her sole caregiver for 6.5 years. It's entirely possible to do. This is a link to information on home testing. There are videos and other helpful information.

In the beginning, all of the information is completely overwhelming. Like Diane said, it does get easier especially as you develop a routine.

I have had 6 diabetic cats and always test before giving any insulin. I have never had any assistance caring for them. At one time I had two diabetic cats plus a dog with epilepsy along with 6 other cats, so it can be done. The key is to find a routine that works best for you. Testing was extremely important since both cats would often have a preshot number too low to give insulin. Because of this I would not give the dose and prevent them from becoming hypoglycemic.

Once you find a routine that works best for you and your cat, you will find testing only takes a few minutes to do. You can do this.

Hi, yes you do need to test before giving insulin to make sure it is safe to do so.

I looked after George and tested him on my own, my friend and neighbour, also managed to test him when I went on vacation.

The videos in the link Sienne provided are really helpful.
If Tweety is food motivated I would suggest using low carb treats to reward her.
I started by rubbing George's ears (no test) and giving him a treat, to get him used to the experience.

Good luck

Hi and welcome! The video in my signature is from when I was still pretty new at the whole thing, I nearly poke the poor cat in the eye but he is so patient and loving, it is amazing.

I was certain I could never get the hang of it, but if I can do so can you! Just takes some practice, and all the tips and tricks from people here...a dab of Vaseline before you poke is a huge help, a key component of my success.

When our first diabetic cat was diagnosed we thought it was some tragic event. We got over that part in 48 hours thanks to a great vet and a cat that would jump onto the table for testing and his shots. By the time our second sugar cat came home it was old news. It's only a tragedy if we make it one. You'll soon see that diabetes is just an inconvenience and you have a whole bunch of new friends here that all started out the same way.
