This my first time posting the correct way. Hope I got it right. This is my prior thread. BG overall seems worse since starting insulin?? | Feline Diabetes Message Board - FDMB

After having the best day yesterday, it seems to be worse again. I will add more #'s to the title as the day progresses. Im probably not going to change the dose with this curve but rather do another one in a few days (probably Sunday). Reasons were discussed in last thread.

Hey Jo.

This was all very new to me just 4 months ago. It is completely overwhelming initially. I promise you it gets easier and your head will eventually stop spinning. Just know you aren't alone. We've all felt the exact same things you are feeling.

Welcome.

Hello Jo. I'm glad to see your post today :)
It will all start to make more sense soon. KAramelle is in yellow already, who knows how low she can go today. How is she doing otherwise?

Great job with setting up the thread. :) She's coming down a little, but I expect she's still bouncing from that sweet little blue (180) yesterday. She needs that increase to 1.25 units. When following SLGS, you keep increasing until their nadirs end up between 90 and 149. She's not there yet, so she needs an increase.

We've seen other cats on Prozac here, that isn't a reason to delay the increase. Staying on a dose longer than needed can actually be detrimental to the cat. Their bodies can develop glucose toxicity. The name sounds worse than it is, but it basically means their bodies get used to higher numbers, and you end up in even higher insulin doses to break through the glucose toxicity.

For the increase of 0.25mls, I guess I have to just eye that since the syringes are half units. Do I just start that tomorrow morning or start today at PMPS.

Thank you. Glad to know I wasnt the only one feeling like a complete idiot.

Yes, you just eyeball the 0.25 unit distance. Some people fill old syringes with coloured liquid (pop, tea, juice) to make a reference syringe. You can increase either tonight or tomorrow. It typically takes a few cycles for the depot to fill for you to see what's really happening on the new dose. Some people like to wait until daytime to increase, but it's really up to you. Over time you'll get a better idea how many cycles after the increase that Karamelle shows you what the dose can do. Then you will have a better idea if AM or PM increases are better.

Hi Jo, I just wanted to echo the sentiment that it’s good to see you posting today.

Diabetes is a lot to grasp up front, and the “alien” nature of posts on the Lantus forum can feel overwhelming at first I know, but if you stick with it, I’m certain you’ll look back soon and be glad you did! Posting every day, especially in the early days, puts a lot more eyes on Karamelle’s diabetes journey, and that’s a good thing. A number of folks scan the threads and/or thread titles every day, looking for those who need help or even catching issues that the poster might not even realize they have. You might get a lot of responses some days, and maybe not many on other days. That doesn’t mean people aren’t watching. And the more people who “have your back” on this journey, the better, right? So please keep testing, keep posting, and keep asking questions. There are no dumb questions because, well, as I was told when I joined the board nearly 19 years ago, it’s all about the cats. Being a former rescuer, I know you “get” that. :)

Give Karamelle an ear scritch for me. I’ll be one of the lurkers looking for your post tomorrow…

Good luck with the increase :cat: I'm glad you increased her dose tonight :cat:

I'm glad to see you posted today :cat:
Jo this was from you post from yesterday so I just copied it again to be sure you saw it

I looked up the carb content on the cans Im feeding and they were much lower than what youve listed here. All under 10%. They are Fancy Feast Classic Pate.

My response
Jo If you're talking about the list I gave you above ( my post # 26) from yesterdays post
I know they are higher than what you are feeding now, they are for your hypo kit med and high carb food they are if you ever need to raise her BG if she ever drops way to low. Yes the Fancy Feast Pates are low carb, they are fine
By the way I'm 3 hours ahead of your time where you live

Jo a favor can you please tap in the like word to the right just so we know you have read the post , I just wanted to be sure you pick up some of the ones I listed for your hypo kit
Thanks :bighug::cat:

Thanks for clarifying about the FF cans you listed. Yes I saw the post but not your response. I do have some higher carb choices here. Not Fancy Feast but something she might eat since i used to feed it. Its Merrick Purrfect Bistro 16% DM carbs. If thats not enough I'll pick up some others.

I would pick up a higher carb also
Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Gourmet Beef Feast in Gravy 20% High Carbs

Or any on the food chart. Doesn't have to be Fancy Feast just an example about the med and high carb foods

https://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/dr-pierson-new-food-

10% and under is low carb
11% -15 is medium carbs.

16- 24 is high carb.
@JoM

EDIT
Pick up some medium carbs too because you may not always need a high carb sometimes

Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Gourmet Chicken Feast in Gravy 15% Med Carbs

Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Turkey Feast in Gravy 15% Med Carbs

Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers Chicken and Beef in Gravy 15% Med Carbs

Jo is this wet or kibble?
On the food chart it says turkey wet is 4% carbs
Chicken is 2% carbs
Beef is 5%

If it is kibble
the dry foods take longer to affect the BG and stay in the system longer so it is not the best option
So you would want wet food for your hypo kit
