Adequan?

Hi all,

I'm looking into treatments for my other non-diabetic kitty, who has severe osteoarthritis. We've been through pretty much all standard treatments and then some, but haven't tried Adequan yet. In my country, it's only licensed for horses, sometimes used off-label for dogs, but never for cats.

I'm wondering if anybody here uses Adequan for their cats? If so, could you share a bit about what kind of protocol you use (subq or intramuscular, dosing, how often, etc)? And how well it works (or doesn't)?

I know there are members here who have used Adequate with their cats. At least for a while, it was an off-label use. I'm tagging @Wendy&Neko -- I don't remember if she used Adequan. If not, she may recall some members who did.

I'm also linking a thread from about a year ago. It's a discussion about Solensia. We've had several members who have used is with their cats and I think it's been getting some good response.

I never used Adequan, it's only available in the US. Well, I could get it in Canada but it was outrageously expensive. We had something called Cartrophen, which is available in more of the world and is similar to Adquan. It too is used off label for cats. I got mixed results with Cartrophen. One kitty it really helped, one it did a bit, Neko not so much. Her arthritis was severe. Cartrophen, like Adequan, was a once a week loading dose for a month, then monthly. Adequan you can get vials (in the US). Not Cartrophen. Well, I actually could but the vial didn't last long once opened making it very expensive. It worked for the vet clinic where they were giving it frequently and would use the vial before it expired. Adequan lasted longer once opened. My vets always preloaded syringes for me to give at home.

The new drug called Solensia, which I know is available in the UK and I think the rest of Europe too. When I say new, it's been around over a year. Like Adequan and Cartrophen, it's a once a month dosing. It may depend on the vet whether they let you do the injections (subq).

He was on Solensia for about a year, unfortunately he developed a severe reaction (itchiness to the point of scratching himself bloody) to his last shot. We just can't risk that again, especially because he can't have steroids to counteract the reaction.

We do have Cartrophen here (named Anarthron here) licensed for dogs. Apparently from what I've read that's not supposed to be given alongside NSAID's? And Mr. Cat is on an NSAID. Curious if ya'll adminstered it to cats alongside NSAID's?

No, Neko didn't get NSAID's. What NSAID is he on and for what? Just wondering if there is an alternative. Neko was on buprenorphine for pain.

Alternatives for arthritis that worked for Neko were acupuncture, hyaluronic acid worked somewhat, Duralactin also worked well.

He's currently on tolfenamic acid, before that he was on robenacoxib, before that meloxicam. For his arthritis. No alternatives are possible, only add-ons due to the severity. Taking him off the NSAID would make life unbearable for him.

He's also on gabapentin, high dose EPA+DHA, UC-II, miralax for constipation and amlodipine for hypertension. Bupe was considered but rejected due to his preexisting constipation.
