12/30 Tiger AMPS 488, 370+3, 268+5, PMPS 446

Tiger is really grazing today. Just came from finishing his breakfast, 4 hours after he started. Is this ok to let him do that. I don’t know how to change his grazing habit. He’s done it so long.

Snickers likes fish too, and it's one of the few foods she can eat with her poultry allergy. She enjoys Tiki Cat varieties. :) Especially the tilapia and salmon in consommé. They have pate versions of tilapia and salmon too, but they have egg in them so Snickers can only eat the consommé varieties. Hope you find something that Tiger likes.

If you're really interested, here are links to the ones I give Snickers. Salmon consommé, tilapia consommé, and seabass consommé.

She loves the seabass, but I've read that seabass is higher in mercury, like tuna, so I try not to give her that one every day. I guess tilapia and salmon are considered low-mercury fish, so I use those more. I also add some Instinct Rabbit into the mix, because Snickers also enjoys variety in her meals.

Snickers is overweight and on a diet, so I also have to be careful with how many calories I give her. The foods she eats are lower calorie compared to others. I can't remember if calories were a concern for you or not, but if they aren't you might want to check out Hound and Gatos. I can only find them on Chewy or Amazon, but they have a nice variety of low-carb wet foods. I used to give Snickers their pork, but it's too high in calories for her so I had to stop for now.

Snickers does not graze, but I do give her snacks throughout the day, even after nadir (which normally, it's not recommended to feed after nadir except for low carb treats). But with Snickers, she gets very, very insanely anxious if she has to go a long time without eating. Like more than three or four hours. I've had cats all my life and never had one freak out in quite the same way she does if she can't eat. I suspect it's got something to do with being raised a barn cat. We only got her when she was about six/seven years old. Before then she was kept outside in someone's barn.

Anyway, so I give Snickers her two main meals at shot time, then smaller snacks at +5 or +6, and +9. If I don't give her the snacks, she freaks out and her BG actually goes up. The snacks keep her calm, and her BG looks better when she eats them. But that's Snickers. :)

Tiger was outside his first 4 years. He really isn’t overweight, maybe a pound. He has tummy issues if he goes over 6 hours without food. I think he grazes instinctively because of that. It’s such a balancing act, isn’t it. Thx for the info!

Oh that's interesting that he gets tummy issues going over 6 hours without food. That's a good observation. The tummy stuff can be so tricky. I remember when we were trying to figure out why Snickers stomach was always upset, and how frustrating it was when nothing seemed to work. It sounds like you're very mindful of Tiger's diet which is great. I hope you guys figure it out soon. :)

Yes I’ve been looking them up. Having trouble matching what store has with the tiki ones in the list.
Trying to decide if we need to get the libre changed today. I know it will fail if we don’t and vet will be closed for holiday.
Might be better to be proactive….so far none have lasted more than a week. Just hate taking him since he is having such a good day.

Deb, I’ve been meaning to ask, what is your usual feeding schedule for Tiger. As Chrissy said, spreading out some snacks in each cycle is a good plan, although I would suggest as you gather more data on Tiger and get a feel for the typical nadirs and duration that I mentioned previously, keep in mind that for some cats feeding after nadir can really put the brakes on the duration. If you find Tiger needs something at +9 I would recommend a couple of low carb freeze dried treats to tide him over.

Yeah, that sucks having to take him in. Poor Tiger. But I suppose it would be worse if the Libre failed while the vet was closed. Maybe Tiger can get an extra treat for being such a good boy.

I buy the Tiki Cats at the Petco near me, except for the Tilapia. I ended up just ordering that one from Chewy. The only Tilapia I could find in the store was the Tilapia Pate, which has the egg in it. Snickers likes pates, too. I wish they didn't all contain egg. It must have something to do with the pate texture, because sooooo many pates have egg in them.

I think the only pates I've found without egg are the Instinct Rabbit and... Hmm. Something else. I don't think it's just Instinct. Although Instinct also has their Original Salmon formula which used to contain egg, but I'm pretty sure no longer does since a formula change. I think it's low carb, too. I've never tried that one though. It contains beef in addition to the salmon, and I don't think Snickers cares for beef. Still, I might try it once just to mix things up and see. You never know.

Anyway, I could talk cat food all day. I swear I've tried them all. Lol. Good luck with the food and the vet both :)

Yes, absolutely. If Tiger's snacks make his BG go up, then freeze dried treats could be better for him. I will give Snickers freeze dried treats at her BG check times and I mix them with a little water so it's more like a gravy. She seems to enjoy that. Plus she has almost no teeth so it's easier for her if the treat is crumbled up and mixed with water. But maybe Tiger prefers little chunks? The freeze dried treats are always good to have on hand.

His schedule is 1 can ff at breakfast, 1 teas ff at +6-+7 , dinner 1 can ff. He usually get a few kibble as treats around pm+1 for a reward.
At bedtime pm+3 he gets a small amount of kibble(about a Tbl) and at pm +7 auto feeder about a tablespoon of kibble. Science diet kibble.
I’m in the process of changing all his foods to LC. I’ve watched his numbers at night around the kibble and the first seems to have no effect and before the later one his numbers have already started rising (before food)
Hope this makes sense..

Ugh. They should not constantly fail after a few days. Sometimes they are duds, but should not be every one for sure.
I’ve read that if the vet uses vet bond glue, that can kill the sensor.
If you think you can try to put them on yourself, it’s a better way to go.
Join the Facebook group Freestyle Libre for Dogs and Cats. for tons of information. There’s videos online on how to apply the sensors.
I’ve been applying them myself for 9 months or so. Only the first one was installed by my vet. I was determined to learn.
Plus, I have had them fail at midnight. And I was able to install a new one right away at home.
I always keep a backup of several at the ready. Sometimes I’ve had to apply 2 till I got it to work correctly, though rare. I hope this helps. :bighug::bighug:

Ah ok, it may be then that’s why he’s continuing to come back and graze after his usual meal. 1 can of FF might be a lot for a kitty to eat at once. Even my guys sometimes won’t finish 1/2 can each at mealtime. I used to like to space out some snacks (1/4 can) around +2 and +3 of the FF since as I mentioned previously with Lantus you’ll often find the onset is around +2 so giving a little LC around +2 and +3 can help bring new carbs on board as the insulin kicks in. And then a snack again around +5 or +6 as we moved into nadir. Just a few thoughts, but of course you can tailor to suit Tiger as you continue to find out a little more about how he responds to insulin and carbs.

The first one fell off day 7, was applied by the vet.
The second one I got a “sensor is bad replace it” message day 6. It was put on by the tech. I know he usd glue and not sure about the first.
This one is going strong with 8 days left but seems to be lifting on the edges. My luck it will go out on the holiday.
I’ve watched them apply the, doesn’t look too bad to do.
Thx

It’s definitely doable. And I have a very feisty cat.

I also use a tegaderm on top of sensor to hold it down and Ivy wears a tee shirt. She’s been known to rip one off when it wasn’t covered. Learned my lesson.

Ok back from vet with new libre on. And yes they use a glue around outer edge.

what is a tegaderm? I don’t think Tiger would wear a shirt tho.
Which libre do you use? Ours is the freestyle libre. I wonder about the one with the alarm…maybe I could get more sleep!

I use the Freestyle Libre 3 and it connects to an app on my phone so I can monitor 24/7.
Here is the tegaderm info:

Ahh, so it goes over the libre to protect it from licking etc?
Yes, sort of. It’s a very thin layer, so if Tiger wants to bite it he still could. It helps hold it on. However, without a tee shirt, Ivy still pulled it off.
So I have her wear a tee shirt or she would pull it off. Some cats leave it alone. Maybe your kitty will ??
Has Tiger left the Libre alone while wearing it?
