Fully eating FF classic and switching to Lantus

Yes. He’s pink. Unless you were thinking of increasing the dose? I thought we were leaving things stable since he’s going to be switching Lantus very soon Otherwise. I suggested an increase after he had been on this dose 7 days.

yes he has an appointment tomorrow afternoon. Should I test tonight to get a good reading as far as how low he goes? At what numbers would he go low or is every cat different?

His nadir may be anywhere from approximately +4 to +6. Are you the kind of person who can wake up and do a test and go back to sleep? Honestly, I think he’s going to be okay. I think you should start the Lantus at 1 unit and that you try to gather as much data as possible. It would be ideal if you could start on a day that you can test.

I would be the person that wakes up to do the test and does not remember doing it
Most meters keep a couple weeks worth of data in their memory, for those of us that do sleep testing. :p

why do you use Vetsulin rather than Lantus?
There is no reason to use Vetsulin instead of Lantus, unless that's all the vet will prescribe for you. My girl was on Caninsulin (what Vetsulin is called in the rest of the world) and we were both happy with the switch.

We strongly recommend starting a new insulin when you can monitor closely the first couple cycles. Some cats have a stronger reaction to the switch. Not most, but just in case.

@Suzanne & Darcy well you said he would get into the blues/greens......but did you think this fast AND without switching to Lantus yet. He shot 120 this morning, so do I not give insulin? I didn't thing it would be this quick so now I am confused as to what to give. Actually I have no clue as to what to give him! I hope you are up this morning! I will tag @Bron and Sheba (GA) as well just in case you are not.

What is your schedule today. I thought on Friday you would be around to test? Oh wait… what time is your appointment today?

Can you retest him now or in 10 more minutes and see what his number is? And how would you feel about shooting a temporarily reduced dose of .5 (a half dose?). Then you would test him starting at about +2. If you skip the insulin entirely I really think he is going to go quite high this afternoon and it will affect his evening cycle as well.
OBTW, I am really happy to see this blue AMPS!

Okay. I would try the .5 dose rather than a skip - since you are going to be home with him and can monitor and feed him as needed. He will probably get stressed out at the vet today anyway and his BG may rise.

Luckily this vet is only 10 minutes away rather than 30 so hopefully not stressed as long!

Darn, I see he went yellow. Try to get another test at +4 if you can. I really wanted to give him a little more insulin, but I didn’t want to go beyond your comfort level and also there is the fact that we don’t have any data on actually shooting when he is in a lower blue since previously the shot was always skipped. So we are gathering data — although Lantus is coming!

Holy Cow.. 518 I guess the vet stressed him out!! Im guessing to give him 1 unit?

I have the written rx for the Lantus so I will go to Good RX and a few other places to get quotes.

The vet appointment went well! She was very impressed with all the information that was presented on the chart! The last vet made a comment about reading information about diabetic cats on the internet, regarding the Vetsulin, and that I shouldn't get my information from the internet.

She was welcoming of the information and was happy about changing the food and being able to lower the insulin from 12 units. She did write it for Glargine :) She also said that she advises not to use Vetsulin on cats.

Excellent

What happened with him last night? What is his AMPS?
I didn't do test last night. I felt terrible, good new is if that is all I got after everyone else being sick I will take it!!

His numbers seem to be looking good to me, with the food and the insulin day and evening now. I am almost afraid to change the insulin!

He could do much better. There’s way too much yellow on that spreadsheet which is very hard on his kidneys. It does take a few days for the depot to build with the glargine insulin before you see the full effect of it. But, as we said, it’s best to switch on a day you can monitor.

@Jenn ~ Thomas
Hi Jenn I see you started Lantus to night PMPS
Do you have the U-100 syringes with the half unit markings yet ? Since we adjust the doses by 0.25 units at a time
If not I can suggest where you can get them just ask
You need to change your signature so members know you switched to lantus and the date
Tap on your name up top and then tap on the word signature and put a /mark after Vetsulin and put now Lantus 12-16 and then tap Save

Also on your spreadsheet do the same up too where you have Vetsulin
I don't think members will see in your remarks section on your SS

*switched to Lantus
We usually put a blank line above the date switched and put Started Lantus PMPS and Color code it any color, so members can see it right away

If you don't know how to do this I'm going to tag Bhooma for you to do it for you

@Bandit's Mom

Thank you! Can you check and see that I did it correctly?

The pharmacy didn't have any with the half unit markings. I have some with just 1 unit so I am using those now. Please let me know where to get the correct syringes. Actually I think you posted when I first came on the board about it if I can find that post. I was going to look for it because I thought it also said that something about the pens lasting a year or something like that. I was reading that it only last 28 days but I am assuming maybe for cats its longer?

]
@Suzanne & Darcy I did a +3 hours and it is higher than the PMPS, should it be lower at this time?
Remember that it will take a few days for the depot to build up - before we see the full effect of the dose. It may be that we need to do an increase after we see how he does.

As for syringes— you are using U-100 syringes, right? You will need the ones with the half unit markings because we will be making dose changes in .25 unit increments and you have to eyeball the plunger between the half and the whole unit marks.
I used to buy mine from ADW Diabetes Supply, but there are some available on Amazon and other places.

Hi Jenn , yes you did it correctly, one thing though on your spreadsheet up top where you have Vetsulin that's under the date Thomas was diagnosed you need to add /Lantus 12/16/23
I see you made the blank line on the spreadsheet and added started lantus above the PM cycle can you just add it under 12/15/2023 so it stands out better
You can just put Lantus PMPS
Sorry I'm a stickler with things :p

If you ever want to find any of your previous posts you did just tap on your name to the left, then tap on profile page , and tap on postings and all of your posts you did will come up

Most members get the generic you can get generic/biosimilar glargine at very reasonable prices using GoodRx coupon. Most members use the generic because Lantus is to expensive.
https://www.goodrx.com/lantus?label...d-pens-of-100-units-ml&quantity=1&slug=lantus
Make sure that the Match your prescription pull down menue says generic glargine 1carton of 5 3ml pens.
There is no wait time test, feed, give insulin
Lantus usually doesn't kick in until 2 hours after the shot

We buy the pens but use the syringes to draw out the insulin because if you use the pen you can only adjust by full units ,we adjust the doses by 0.25 units
If you do switch back to lantus the generic you will need
U -100 SYRINGES WITH HALF UNIT MARKINGS
I can suggest a few if you would like

Also
The 5 pens will last about a year, we use the pens just like a vial, you would just insert the syringe it the gray rubber stopper on the pen and draw out your insulin
Its generic lantus

Or this one also

I see some members will call CVS, Rite Aid, Costco, Walgreen's, to get the price for 5 pens

. I paid $175 for a box of 5 pens at Walmart pharmacy, but GoodRX coupon says you can get it for around $90 if you have a Rite Aid pharmacy near you.

Just call around for the best price

A member just posted this
Allie was using the Lantus and I just switched to the generic and using the GoodRX I got 5 pens for $81.30 at Walgreens.

GoodRX has a 1-800 number to assist you in using their services to get your pets prescriptions filled if the pharmacy gives you any issues.

I think I found it for you
GoodRx / Customer service

You can also get them from Amazon , I'm pretty sure you won't need a script if you order them from Amazon
