AMPS 389
+11 56

Gosh darnet!!! This is starting to get SOOO frustrating. Every time I try to give him 2 units (due to 1.75 clearly not being enough) his body drops WAY too low!!! I don’t understand what to do. 1.75 units isnt enough but 2 units is always too much. I don’t feel good about this and it feels like I’m in a losing game with him. I understand I should be testing him more, and if I can afford the strips I do, but this has almost been 6 months of this and it’s a back and forth of dosage. I don’t know what I can be doing better. Again, I know I can test him more but even when I do it’s still a back and forth of units it seems like. He’s also starting to lose weight. He’s 12.4 now..he’s slowly losing weight, it’s not as fast as it was before he started insulin, but he’s already so skinny he can’t get any more skinny. I don’t have the money to triple his food to ensure he gets more calories..he’s already getting about 400 a day. I’m starting to feel very hopeless and I feel like I’m not being good mom. I will start testing him more due to multiple people on here telling me if gives better info..but I don’t know how much better it’ll do for him. I can stop SLGS and move onto TR but I just don’t think right now I can afford soooooo many test strips to do it. I’m feeling lost and worried right now. I’m skipping his insulin tonight I think, even if I do give it to him in about an hour, I’m going back down to 1.75.:banghead: But 1.75 clearly isn’t enough…so here we go back on the darn back and forth cycle again.

Hi Katrina, I think you did the right thing by skipping his insulin tonight with a pmps that low. You will need to reduce his dose for tomorrow but remember the higher depot will still have more insulin from the 2 units.
Let’s tag some more expert advisors to get you some help.
I know you are frustrated and worried for Bubbas. It can take a while to get them under control (I’m still struggling too).
Please be strong and hang in there for your sweet boy :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thank you for tagging some more experts! No matter how frustrating it is, I don’t give up. Honeslty it’s just starting to get sad to see him almost wither away..he’s my emotional support animals and I don’t know mentally what I would do without him. I’ll skip insulin tonight and I’ll go back to 1.75 in the am.

I'm so sorry that you are overwhelmed and I totally understand the going up and down in dose. Cleo and I have been doing just that going on 2 years now. I'm sure you are doing your very best and Bubbas feels loved by you. :bighug: What's Bubbas ideal weight?
You have mentioned having some difficulties paying for his care. Have you seen Financial Help Links.

Its good that you skipped the dose and you are correct to go back to 1.75 in the morning. When following SLGS, you generally do not shoot any number under 90.

No I haven’t checked out the link but I will! And thank you for the encouraging words! Wow 2 years?? At least your baby is still up and kickin which is what I hope for bubbas if we are on this remission journey for that long. And you know I’m not sure what his ideal weight is. When he got weighed last he was 13 at the vet and his vet said she wants to see him gain more weight.

I'm glad you managed to catch that +11 today, instead of waiting until PMPS time. Whatever spidey senses you have, it worked!
due to 1.75 clearly not being enough
I beg to differ. You never did a curve on 1.75 units, but you did catch him getting as low as 105. With SLGS, you stay with that dose if it's giving you nadirs in the 90-149 range, which 1.75 units was doing multiple times. Hopefully you'll see more evidence of how 1.75 units is doing this next time. It also helps to remember that a cat's insulin dose can change over time. You just have to move the dose based on the numbers you see. Very seldom do we see a cat stick to the same dose all the time.

One of the reasons I was encouraging you to get some spot checks when you can, even though you are following SLGS is as I explained before, unfortunately we don’t actually know whether 1.75u wasn’t clearly enough. Yes, following SLGS you don’t want to shoot a number under 90. Getting extra data points by running a curve are helpful in finding out how the insulin is working, and gives you a better sense of some of these basic concepts:
  • Onset - the length of time before insulin reaches the bloodstream & begins lowering blood glucose
  • Peak/Nadir - the lowest point in the cycle
  • Duration - the length of time insulin continues to lower blood glucose
I had thought you were planning to get some extra tests in today, those data points would have been interesting.

I ended up having to do some Door Dash today to earn some extra money. I wanted to do the curve and I have the test strips for it but I had to drive for door dash to earn some income. I will 100% be doing a curve this weekend though. I have the test strips and made sure to not have anything planned for this coming Saturday .
