Just trying to navigate through this forum as well as new diagnosis. My Simbaa has fatty liver disease, ketones in his urine and is being tube fed. He is on prozinc insulin and being fed royal cabin recovery through his tube. What should my day look like? As far as testing and feeding times. He has also developed diarrhea because of the food, so will this play a factor in everything? He does have a cone and unable to feed himself so am giving him lickable treats and water. He also receives 100ml of lactated ringers subcutaneously twice a day and is on an antibiotic, vitamin k and Zentonil

Hi Lara! The is Chris from the FD group! So glad to see you're posting here now.

Here's some more information on "How you can help us help you" which includes getting your "Signature" set up. (You'll see ours under every comment we make).

Having that information show up every time you post means we don't have to waste time asking the same questions over and over again.

I understand you're not feeling too well today so if it's too much right now, maybe you can work on it a little later. You also have to make sure to take care of you! If you're sick, you won't be able to help Simbaa either!

Just wanted to say I’m happy to see you here too! I’m Becky RJ Van Cleave on FB. I posted last night about what testing might look like. I know it’s overwhelming so I can repost that here if it would help, just let me know.

Hi Chris! Lovely to see you over here.

Thanks! We've been encouraging Lara to post here due to her cat's very delicate condition and wanted her to have the best advice from both places, but especially wanted Bron following her here so was happy to see she replied to her post on the group last night.

ETA..just FYI, Lara is in Canada.

Hi Lara!
So glad to see you made it over here to the forum from FB.
Are you home testing the blood glucose ?
I’m going to ask @Bandit's Mom to help you with a spreadsheet and the signature as I know you are very busy looking after Simbaa.
I’ll post this to let you know I’ve seen you have made it over to the forum and I will write more below.

Hi Lara. Below is some information for you to follow for Simba because he has DKA and fatty liver. You will see it is really important he eats and he eats often. Having the feeding tube in will make it much easier for you both.
Did the vet give you anything for nausea such as cerenia or ondansetron to give each day?How bad is the diarrhoea? Is it very runny? And how many times a day is he going?

Below is the routine you need to be following.
  • you need to give one and a half times as many calories as he normally eats. Offer snacks every couple of hours during the day and evening as well as the 2 main meals. Food is like a medicine and helps keep ketones away. More about this below…
  • Don’t skip any doses of insulin as insulin helps keep ketones away. If the BG is not high enough to give the dose…stall, dont feed and test again in 20 minutes and post and ask for help.
Are you hometesting the BGs yet?
  • Test daily for ketones. To do this you will need to buy a bottle of Ketostix from walmart or a pharmacy and test the urine. Put the results of the tests into the remarks column of the SS so we can see. Please report any trace ketones at all. Ask more about this if you are unsure.
  • Give antinausea medication if needed…cerenia and /or ondansetron
  • Give appetite stimulant if needed after the antinausea medication.
  • Give extra fluids. If kitty will tolerate warm water in the food, put a teaspoon into each snack…as you are using a feeding tube, you can add 5 or 10 mls before and after each feed which you need to be doing anyway to flush the tube after the food
  • It is great you are doing subQ fluids. That will help a lot.
  • Set up a spreadsheet and test the BG frequently..I’ve asked @Bandit's Mom to do this for you.
  • Post daily or more frequently with updates and ask for help as often as needed.
What food were you feeding before all this happened? The diarrhoea has probably happening because of the fast changeover of food to the Hills a/d. It is a great food to give at the moment but too fast a change will cause diarrhoea.
How much does Simbaa normally weigh?
How much food were you told to feed each time and how many times a day were you told to feed no by the vet?
Bron
