Hi folks,
Haven't been around on this forum lately. Sam's doing quite well, started testing again more regularly. He's on 1 unit of Lantus still twice per day. Was only testing occasionally over the last little while as he's been stable on 1 unit for a while and I didn't really have the money to continue testing 2-3x per day. Will probably restart his spreadsheet soon, probably a good thing to do.
He seems to be grooming himself a lot over the last 4 months. His poops are essentially built around cores of hair at this point, and the constipation occasionally causes him to puke a bit when he overeats. He's on a small amount of miralax and has been for the last like 9 months or so. Without it he literally just poops out dry nuggets that have zero moisture content, like at all. It obviously causes him distress as he'll poop outside of the litter box if he doesn't get miralax due to the fact he's essentially passing rocks.
He's drinking enough water, just not really sure what could be causing this. It's been going on for a while. Not sure if it's the grooming (he doesn't shed much because he is so ontop of it, he's a long haired cat)? Even when I groom him myself with his comb, he still has these hard poops unless he gets enough miralax. You know how with some cats you'll pet them and hair comes flying off and their coat feels kind of harsh because they don't groom themselves much? My sister's cats are like that. That's not Sam. His coat is like silk at this point with very little shedding because he's ontop of his grooming habits. There's only one spot on his upper shoulder area where it looks like he's going at it too much (looks think sometimes if he overdoes it) on both sides? Apart from that he doesn't seem to be overgrooming. He only really started this when he got on the insulin back in August of 2022, before that he'd shed like crazy.
Guess my question is if this is normal and if I should be doing anything here? Because without the miralax he literally will pass these stools with zero moisture.
