Hello cat parents!
My senior girl Mae was recently diagnosed with diabetes and she’s been on Lantus (well generic glargine) for 2.5 weeks. Mae is 13 and up until the last year has been very healthy. On top of the diabetes which is new she has really bad skin allergies and suspected autoimmune disease pemphigus. The normal treatment for pemphigus is prednisone for the rest of her life but due to the diabetes she can’t be on that. Instead she’s now on cyclosporine (has been only for the last few days as it took the medicine awhile to come in special order).
Mae is on 2 units of insulin twice per day approximately 12 hours apart. Her glucose at the start was 540 and we started her on 1 unit 2x per day. I brought her back in at 2 weeks to do a checkup and she had gone down to 490 which is of course still super high so we increased to 2 units 2x per day. I haven’t started home testing yet as the vet advised me to wait until we get her numbers a little lower. Not sure if this is good advice based off reading other threads though?
I am feeding her the Purina pro plan diabetic management dry food. I also sprinkle some fortiflora on there because she was having some loose poops and it seems to be much better. (Is it fine to keep her on the fortiflora long term?)
id like to incorporate some wet food in but she’s super duper picky so will likely have to try a bunch.
This post doesn’t have a point really I guess just looking for some insight, advice, etc. especially if you’ve had cats with double issues! I was told her kidney and liver functions are great.
Thank you for all you do!
