Please take a look at Thor's SS

Hi!

You can use the balanceit online calculator to figure out the ME% (% of calories) of carbs.
It would be better to write to/call the manufacturer to figure out the TNA values of the carbs though since values from online calculators use the GA values which are based on min/max values and will give only loose approximations.

Based on the links you’ve shared above the dry foods are too high in carbs (22.23% and 33.56%) while the wet foods seem to be low carb (6.62% both).

This recent thread has some suggestions for LC wet foods available in South Africa. Have a look :)

Thanks a lot Nimi will be in contact with them tomorrow. Sorry wanted to reply sooner but was left without internet today for some reason. And thanks for the links going to look into them. Unfortunately Thor is a picky eater and is not eating well at the moment. He seems to eat all the gravy and a bit of his kibble but that's it.. It's a real struggle with him at times. He will walk around and follow you while wiggling his tail or chase you but eating is another matter all together.

Good evening

please could someone take a look at Thor's SS want to just get some feedback on his progress, I know I haven't been checking his curve as often as most people do as both my wife and I have full time jobs.

There's no mention in your signature of which dosing strategy you're using with Lantus nor is it obvious from Thor's spreadsheet. Regardless of which approach to dosing you're using, you need to be getting more tests in. The minimum number of tests you need to get is 4 -- your AM and PM pre-shot tests and a minimum of one addition test during both the AM and PM cycles. Dose changes are based on how low the dose is bringing your cat's numbers. From the data on Thor's spreadsheet, there's no way to know if he needs a dose increase or a dose reduction. The pre-shot numbers don't tell you that.

Since you've been using Lantus, the doses need to be adjusted either after a week (if following Start Low Go Slow) or 3 days (if following Tight Regulation). You've been holding the 1.0u dose since August. Unfortunately, holding a dose that's not bringing Thor into better numbers can cause glucose toxicity to develop. What that means is that his body become accustomed to the high numbers and it's more challenging to get him into a better range.

Hi Sienne & Gabby, Sorry for such a late reply.

I have been away for work, I'm not to sure on which protocol you could say I'm using as his been consistent on his meal and dosages.
Regards to his testing I am just not able to do 4 tests a day as my wife and I have full time jobs. we are just doing the best we can with what we have. weekends I can do more tests as I am at home but week days its just impossible.

I completely understand. I worked full time throughout Gabby's diabetes and I was her sole caretaker. Try to consider if moving Thor's shot time would allow you to get more tests (e.g., Gabby's shot time was at 5:00. It allowed me to get a test in after AMPS before I left for work. Work, however, was not far and I could be home before 5:30 PM.) If you can get PM tests when you're home, it will also help. There's just no way to know what's going on in between shot times so you don't know whether to increase or decrease Thor's dose.

Wouldn't be able to move it as I leave at 4.30 most mornings. We both work far from home but will try get a few more tests in. I noticed when he gets Weruva for dinner or Breakfast his BS stays lower longer, just worried that it drops way to low when we not home. he had Weruva yesterday for Dinner with a BS of 18mmol and now this morning his BS is 5.3mmol, very lively so I gave him Weruva for Breakfast with no shot. hoping its not to high later.

I also read up somewhere that Diabetic cats should try be kept in a BS range of 14-16mmol is this true?

also noticed that his one eye is more watery on some days, not sure if its a reaction to food or his shot. he seems fine though. should I be concerned about this?
he is also naughty when he gets his Paws on some pine needles that blow into the cattery on some days as this makes him throw up. he also throws up hairballs some days.

In regards to his Dosing strategy I'm not to sure which to follow as I have been keeping him on a pretty consistent dosage same with feeding, wet food that is appropriate for him to eat has gotten quite pricy and lately Weruva is the one that I am most able to get my hands on. if I am able to get him fully of kibble, Weruva will work out to about $200 a month pretty steep for our economy but I'm going to try my best to move him over completely over. his current feeding schedule is 1 day kibble and one day weruva but mornings is kibble. I have also had to lower his amount of food as his weight is now sitting on 5.6kg.
I put Thor onto a Pet insurance early December last year so it will be kicking in soon so that will help a lot with the expenses.

I thank you for all of you advise it is much appreciated.
