VERY High BG last night/this morning

Hi everyone just wondering what everyone does in this situation. My kitty Fred has had a terrible time trying to get his BG regulated since he was diagnosed a few months ago. Had a very bad night last night with numbers in the 600+ (meter reading HI). My mom had to administer his insulin last night as I was out so he could have gotten a fur shot but I still just don’t understand what’s making his numbers THIS high. He got his 3 units this morning and is finally now getting below 600 (587 as of +3) anyone have any insight or experience with this?

just started his SS yesterday so I know there isn’t much to go by as of now. Also ordered ketostix just waiting for them to arrive tomorrow

he’s been on wet food (the vet set him at 250 cal) so he eats tiki cats aloha friends variety 2 cans and a little bit extra a day, that’s it. This is all so nerve racking. I appreciate any help!
 
Without more data, I'm going to be guessing. My best hunch is that what you were seeing is what we call a "bounce." Fred dropped from a +3 test of 368 (and it's very likely his AMPS was higher) to a low at +6 of 240. If his body is used to high numbers and he drops to a range he's less used to spending time in, his liver and pancreas will react by releasing a stored form of glucose along with counterregulatory hormones. This caused the blood glucose numbers to spike. It can take several days for the bounce to clear.

So if this is a bounce (which I also believe) and it is happening pretty consistently does this mean his insulin dosage is too high right now? How to I keep it from dropping so much so fast. This is the part of this whole diabetes that confuses me. I feel like I’m doing something wrong :(
 
It doesn’t mean the dose is too high. It could mean that but it could be what Sienne said about him dropping to numbers his body is not used to. They may be safe numbers but lower than he’s used to. You’ll have to be patient as you gather more data and then we’ll be able to give you dosing advice.

Revising this to add if he has the libre on, do you ah e more data you can plug into the ss?
 
Yes , 3 units! Missed that part filling it in today thank you for pointing it out! I’m gonna keep up with it and see what happens. & know I looked through some of the Lantus tabs I’m gonna go in there today and pull up the rest. Thanks!!

the thing with the Libre is I can go back and look at specific days but it only shows everything in graph form unfortunately which I hate. I can’t look at exact numbers throughout the day that I would be able to fill the chart with :(

Scratch the whole Libre thing. I figured out how to go on their website and view all the numbers there. I filled in his SS from the beginning of October so far if that helps anything at all.
 
It looks like Fred needs more insulin. With SLGS, you would be evaluating your cat's dose every 7 days. If his numbers are not in a desirable range, you want to increase the dose by 0.25u. If at any time, his numbers drop below 90, he gets a dose reduction (e.g., on 10/2 his dose should have been reduced by 0.25u). I'd encourage you to read over the dosing guideline for SLGS so you have a handle on how and when to adjust doses. It takes a while to get used to the process.

Sounds good, I really just started reading up on this stuff and the SLGS method this last week or so, I’ll increase his dose starting today though and see how he responds. thanks!

Hi there, I use a Libre 3 also and have the app on my phone. I can see precise numbers 24/7.
Are you using a phone dedicated to Fred to read his Libre numbers?

I appreciate the help a bunch! I do use the app on my phone, are you able to scroll back on the day and look at your reading for whatever time you wanna view? On mine I’m only able to view a precise number in real time, can't go back and view any previous numbers for the day (other than in graph form). Found a way around that with the Libre link up app but even that only lets you scroll through the last 24 hours.
Ended up figuring out you can go on the lebreview website and view your entire history so I was able to start backdating on his spread sheet!! Glad for this forum and all the helpful people so far! Thank you!! :bighug:

It sounds like you are using your personal phone to monitor Fred (let me know).
You want to use a phone just for Fred (if possible) and use the Libre Linkup app on your phone where you are able to move the scroll bar to any moment for the past 12 hours and see the exact bg numbers recorded. (Does this make sense?)

That way, you leave the dedicated phone at home with Fred and you can see his movement on your personal phone 24/7.
(I bought a used iPhone 8 to leave at home with Ivy, it stays within 33 feet of her as much as possible, to transmit data to the app).

The next Libre sensor you put on Fred you scan with “his” phone and the Libre app, and then link the Libre View account to you (send an invite to yourself). That’s how you monitor from your personal phone. (A little confusing at first to figure this all out)

***Check out the Facebook group Freestyle Libre for Dogs and Cats, which has very detailed instructions and vast information about how to manage the Libre (and apply them and remove them safely).
I have learned to apply the sensor myself and don’t use my vet at all for this process. (And the sensors do fail early at times so I always have a few extras on hand to apply any time day or night, (it’s happened many times).

If the sensor fails contact Abbot, report the failure and they will send a replacement to you (**never say it’s for a cat).

Ohhh! Yes, it’s my personal phone. I was wanting him to have his own personal phone at the start of this whole thing but didn’t have one unfortunately, now that you remind me I think I’ve got one that’ll work now :joyful: I understand completely now, I’ll switch him over asap!

Also this last sensor was finally put on myself with no vet visit so I’m slowly getting the hang of stuff. Glad I don’t need a vet for every little thing now :D Thanks a bunch!
