Hi Gabrielle, I agree with everything that Wendy has said. Although she has probably said it on a much nicer fashion than I would have!:p

Please, please no not go back to 1 unit. Resetting never works and can certainly end badly with such things as insulin resistance and DKA, and weeks wasted with Cooper in high numbers again. If the vet looks back at the beginning of Coopers SS he can see what 1 unit did. Why would he want to go back there? Unfortunately he knows very little about FD.
Before I joined FDMB I was all at sea with Sheba's insulin. My vet didn't know what else I could do either and he was man enough to admit it and was willing to learn with me.
I ended up ringing a vet in Queensland named Rhett Marshall, who I found online and (unbeknownst to me at the time) was very involved with FD at Queensland Uni with Roomp and Rand. He has a PhD in Feline Diabetes and has written many papers on FD. He spoke to me for more than 20 minutes on the phone, told me I was testing enough to know that I was not giving too much insulin and said to just keep going up slowly until Sheba responded. He gave me so much confidence and empowered me to keep going. He said he would be happy to talk to my vet if he needed help. If only there were more like him around.

You have done such a really great job with getting Cooper up to this point, don't go backwards. Remember you are Coopers advocate, you are paying the vet for advice...and you don't have to take it. :bighug:

Good morning!

Thank you for your constant encouragement! I thought about it, stressed about it, thought about it some more. I'm not going to do that to Cooper, I just don't see the logic or the point. Like you said, we tried 1 unit, we tried 2, we tried 3. Why are we repeating the same mistake? My biggest worry is me getting up the courage to tell my vet that I'm not doing it and why. I don't want him to take it as insolence or that I don't trust in his knowledge. I'll have to be really tactful about it, and I think I can, but I get really nervous to bring up anything potentially contentious lol! I will just need to gather my information and let that speak for me, if he's willing to read it.

It's just so hard! When an alleged expert gives you counterproductive advice!
When I talked our vet, I did give her the paper Bron mentioned, and told her that we are following this protocol and that many kitties have gone into remission with this. She was rather intrigued and kind of back off to let me work on it. Hope your vet will be reasonable and respectful of you as Cooper's mom :bighug:

As a sign of when happens when he doesn't get enough insulin, look at today's AMPS. Seems he might need the dose you are giving. ;)

My vet got a copy of the TR paper with the latest spreadsheet too. With the testing you did to now (and I did too), you can see improvement as the dose increases. The spreadsheet is a great tool.

you can see improvement as the dose increases.

I thought so, but he didn't see improvement since the numbers are "too low" and the bouncing. I will just have to show him otherwise. Plus Cooper is doing so much better than the ravenously hungry, water obsessed kitty that he was!

Are these big drops or is this normal? Seems like he's dropping rather quickly.

Also, not sure if anyone experienced this, but the ear that I put the appetite stimulatant on (it's an ointment, Mirataz) seems to have really thin blood now. When I try to get a BG test in that ear, the blood will not bead and just runs like water and I can't get the reader to pick up anything. I can't seem to find anything online that it would cause that, so maybe a coincidence, but that has always been his "good" ear for testing.

Are you alternating ears for the Mirataz? And cleaning the previous one with a warm wet wipe or gauze? Mirataz came out after Neko's time, so I don't have experience with poking an ear getting it.

Not an uncommon phenomenon the second cycle after a skip. Not sure why, just something I've observed. Have you given him some food to try to slow him down?

I've only given it once, but I do plan to alternate. I didn't clean it, so perhaps that was the issue! I'll be sure to do that next time and it'll likely help.

Yes, he had a teaspoon of LC at +3 and +4. :) Do you think LC is good enough for right now or do I need something a little higher carb?

Try another tsp of LC, he seems to be slowing down. When do you think his typical nadir is?

Perhaps I stand corrected because now he's at 55. Not a huge difference from 61, though. I'm going to feed him another tsp of LC! Usually he'll go up from here.

Sorry, I'm needy tonight lol. Just want to make sure Cooper is all good before I go to sleep. He tested a little lower just now, but this is still considered flat, right? Do I need to be feeding any more snacks or be worried?
