I just recently started Cato on Glargine because it was too difficult to receive the Vetsulin in good condition here in Florida and there were too many spikes and lows. He was on 4.5 units and I have found after 3 weeks now that he is now on the same dose of glargine. Im finding it's harder to get consistancy with glargine as his amps are usually high (340-450) and his pmps are sometimes as low as 50. He is fed friskies pate twice a day at about 2/3 of a can each meal. What am I missing here? He also seems to walk better when his numbere are higher.

Hi Terry, welcome to LLB! Do you have a spreadsheet for Cato that we can look over? I'm new here too, but I do believe our kitties bodies get "used to" high numbers and they think they feel better, when it's just become their norm. My Smudge used to feel terrible when he was in good numbers, but he finally feels great there now. It sounds like Cato is having a lot of high and low swings, so if we can see what's going on, the experts here can likely help.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have a spreadsheet as I could not figure out how to create it (even following instructions. I do keep records though.

Maybe someone here can help walk you through it. It will be the best tool to get guidance here, as we need to see your past data and new data in real time to help the best way we can.

What step of the instructions are you getting held up at?

Can you set up your signature, click on your name up top then tap on signature add the info
The signature is at the end of everyone's post in gray ,information about our cats
Once you buy the meter you can add that
  • Add info we need to help you:
    • Caregiver & kitty's name
    • DX: Date
    • Name of Insulin (do not include dose or frequency)
    • Name of your meter
    • Diet: "LC wet" or "dry food" or "combo"
    • Dosing: TR or SLGS or Custom (if applicable)
    • DKA or other recent health issue (if applicable)
    • Acro, IAA, or Cushings (if applicable)
    • Spreadsheet link. Please put the signature link on the bottom line of your signature information, on its own, so it is easy to find.
    • Please do not put any information about your location in the signature for security reasons. If you wish to add your country location, please add it to your profile.
Be sure to click the 'Save Changes' button at the bottom. If you need help urgently it is important we know these things at a glance. We don’t want to waste valuable time finding out information.

Don't be nervous about the spreadsheet
About the spreadsheet
AMPS - means AM Pre Shot the first test you take in the AM ,you need to withhold food 2 hours before testing so it's not food influenced

Units is where you would put how much insulin you gave
+1 is one hour after giving insulin if you were to test then that's where you enter his _BG number
+2 two hours after giving insulin. ditto
+3 and so on until you get to PMPS - PM pre shot withhold food 2 hours before testing

+1 same as you do for AM cycle

We don't give times because we are all in different time zones that's why we use the + numbers

You would add any other tests after your AMPM and PMPS tests
To do this you look to the right and will see the word Thread Tools tap in that then tap on Edit title add your tests and tap save

In your title you would put the date, Cato then AMPS, the additional tests and then PMPS etc

He is fed friskies pate twice a day at about 2/3 of a can each meal.
We feed our cats the bigger meal at AMPS (AM Pre Shot first test in the morning) Don't feed your cat 2 hours before that because you don't want the BG to be influenced by food. Same goes for the PMPS ( PM Pre Shot first test at night )
Most of us feed smaller meals 3 or 4 times a day, it's easier on the pancreas ,like 1 teaspoon of wet food.add a little water to. It
Try not to feed past +6 ( 6 hours after giving insulin)
You don't have to check the BG every time you feed a snack unless you see the BG is dropping too low. You will know that when you test @+2 or @+3 and @+6

Thanks for the info, Diane. I was trying to do this on my phone. When I get back this afternoon, I will work on all of this and hopefully I can get this going now that my life is more organized.

Welcome to the FDMB. Vetsulin is ok fur dogs bit not really for cats. It works quite differently. Lantus is a depot insulin. Once the spreadsheet is up we can help you. strongly suspect Cato is bouncing from reaching lower bg numbers he’d not used to. I’m going to ask the mods to
.move this thread to the main/health forum until you get set up with a signature and spreadsheet. In the meantime please read the methods and basics stickies at the top of this forum. There’s a lot of great info there.
