Hi!

I'm not sure what happened overnight, but Cooper is acting off. I picked him up this morning and he cried like it hurt, and I think he is nauseous. He threw up a bit of bile, but that isn't uncommon for him these days when it comes near time to eat. He won't even eat his freeze-dried chicken treats and is acting rather pitiful. :( He was acting completely normal last night before I went to bed.

Anything I can do for him if he's feeling sick? I'm afraid to give his shot if he won't eat at all.

Yesterday's thread:

I'm afraid I will have to skip because I don't think there is any way he will eat. The chicken treats are his absolute favorite, and he won't even try to eat one. :( I wish I knew what brought this on. It seems similar to the past time that he was feeling unwell and vomiting.

No more vomiting besides the foam/bile this morning. Still acting like he feels ill and refusing all food. Of course it's Saturday and nothing is open. An old vet of mine is open Saturday mornings until noon, but I'm unsure if they see patients. I'm going to give them a call once they open.

I'm just rambling here because I'm worried, but perhaps I should give a smaller dose this morning? It's about an hour past shot time, but I wonder if it'd be better to give some rather than none at all or is he's too low to do that without food?

I’m so sorry he’s not eating, maybe tagging someone who might be awake nor could help. :bighug:@Bron and Sheba (GA) @Bandit's Mom @Gill & George

Oh boy, Gabrielle.
I am so sorry. You must be worried to pieces.
Maybe Cooper ate something he shouldn't last night? Like a bug or plastic?
I would be afraid to shoot too under the circumstance.
I just saw Staci tagged some people - I'll also tag @Angela & Cleo and @tiffmaxee.
Hang in there -even if you skip, he'll recover from it. I tend to think safety first, but I would like those with experience help you
Sending you :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I'm wondering that too, but he is confined to one bedroom at night and there isn't much in there. You never know though. Thank you for tagging, I need to get better about that. I appreciate your well wishes!

Hi Gabriella. I’m sorry you’re in this tough spot. I know it’s really not an easy decision to make. I’m sorry no one of the people qualified to give advice are around but please do keep on sharing. Just so you know you’re not alone in this :bighug::bighug::bighug:

That's so kind of you, thank you! I wish I was better at making decisions in situations like this, but I tend to not be confident enough that I will make the right choice.

Cooper is just sleeping next to me now, but still refusing food and just acting different than usual. I'm hoping this will pass in a few hours like it did the other night he felt nauseous.

Don’t don’t beat yourself. It’s not an easy decision to make. We’re always told don’t shoot if no food. So… it’s hard to make these decisions without a lot of experience. I’m totally with you.
Nice that Cooper is next to you and getting some warmth and love.
You said it’s happened before? Perhaps you can think of what helped in the past? I’m these occasions I can get so stressed that I stop thinking about these things lol. hopefullt some help will be here soon :bighug:

Oh Gabrielle I'm so sorry Cooper isn't feeling well.:bighug::bighug::bighug: what time does the vet open?
.
How long since shot time?
Is there a history of ketones? Have you tried meat only baby food or some homemade boiled chicken?

I'm sorry! I actually fell asleep waiting for this vet to open.

It's about 3 hours past shot time now, no history of ketones, and unfortunately I don't have anything like that here. I could definitely go get some though to try it!

You said it’s happened before? Perhaps you can think of what helped in the past?

It seems similar to an episode earlier this month, but I couldn't figure out what happened then. I did cut back on a digestive supplement, and I had thought that had helped. Yes, I tend to lose my brain a bit when stuff like this happens too lol.

Sorry no-one was around for you earlier Gabrielle. How much past shot time are you?.
Do you have any ondansetron or cerenia you can give him?

I'm sorry, I totally fell asleep waiting for the vet to open! It's almost 3 hours past shot time. Should I have given? Just so I know for the future.

I don't have any of that, sadly. I need to get some for sure. He did just poop, so I'm going to try to see if maybe that helped settle his stomach.

Good idea to have some ondansetron and /or cerenia on hand in case it is needed. It is always needed when the vet is not open.
You can usually safely give a 1/2 dose of insulin in a situation like that. If a diabetic cat is fasting for an operation or procedure, the vets usually say give a 1/2 dose of insulin.
Seeing you have skipped, if you want to bring the schedule forward at all, now is your chance.
How is Copper now.? Has he eaten anything?

Dang it, I was thinking about giving half. Wish I would have.

Cooper seems better after pooping which is odd because he pooped yesterday and had been pooping fine. He ate a chicken treat! He is wanting to walk around, cleaning himself, sniffing food, but not eating. I tried giving multiple options, and of course he did seem slightly interested in the HC food (I didn't actually give any, just wanted to see).

I am wondering I need to make the vet appointment now...I already planned on taking him Oct. 4th. Problem is, if I don't make the vet appointment for today, they are only open until 12pm so it'd be ER vet after that for anything.

I am going to go to the store to get some baby food and plain chicken.

I would definitely do as Bron suggested

And those medications are only available from the vet, right? Perhaps I should just go ahead and make an appointment if that's the case. I just worry that he will choose not to eat again later and it'll be an even bigger issue. :/

Yes I would make the appointment and get some anti nausea meds to have at home. And the vet can give up him the once over and check he’s OK.

I ended up calling them and they didn't have any availability until Monday. :( Of course. I am thinking I will try these different foods when I get home, and if he still won't eat, I suppose we'll be off to the ER vet.

Update:

Cooper is eating the baby food!!! :D Plain chicken and chicken broth. I did not think about the sodium content until just now though...I hope it isn't too high.

Thank you so much, everyone. This community is amazing, everyone is so kind, supportive, and helpful. Sorry for the 911 call for something that was clearly not a 911 lol. I appreciate you all putting up with my anxious questions every day. Cooper will be going to the vet next week and I will be sure to get some nausea meds for him.

I was asleep when all this happened. At your next vet appointment ask for ondansetron and cerenia to have on hand. Try and get a packet of cerenia which is 4 tablets and 20 ondansetron. Vets often don’t give enough ondansetron. Had to keep going back for more and I know this :banghead: You end up paying way too much to not get enough pills because of the dispensing fee. If your vet doesn’t have ondansetron ask for an RX. I try never to be without it.

The good news is he’s eating. I really worry if baby food is turned down. :bighug:

@Gabrielle17 how's Cooper doing?

He's acting like it never happened now, of course. He has been following me around today, ate his dinner like normal, and is even eating his snacks (sometimes he leaves them lately if it isn't "the right flavor"). And no more baby food since this morning, just FF.

I wish I could pinpoint exactly what happened. My best guess is just the acid build up from the anticipation of food in the morning, but I'm really not sure!

Thanks for checking on him! :bighug:

Glad I read to the end and he's starting to feel better now and eating.

And I have to correct this common misconception. Even kitties who cannot eat because they are about to get anaesthesia can get at least a half dose. Insulin does more in the body than combat the carbs in food. As long as you are home testing, you can give some insulin. Very interesting read about this in this Think Tank post:
Some bad advice for newbies
