I took Spook to the vet today to have a urinalysis done & have his teeth checked. He peed an hour before we left for the vet & unlike Panzer he is very good at the vet & he was able to do a full examination on him. His bladder was empty so they gave me a sterile cup to get a clean catch in from him & take it back to him. The vet said he had gingervitis & plaque on his teeth & could use a cleaning & while doing that if any teeth needed pulled they would do that. I don't have the $ for that right now so he gave me clindamycin 75 mg capsules to give him twice a day. Is that a safe antibiotic for my boy? He weighs 14lbs, I don't know how I'm going to fit the capsule in a pill pocket but I'm going to try if it's safe to give to him? He will get his first dose in 1hr & 20mins from now, which will be at Panzer's PMPS feeding. That is normally when they both get there 2nd dose of D Mannose but I will give Spook his dose at a later feeding.

Clindamycin is generally fine. If it's a really big capsule, make sure to squirt some water down Spooks throat to make sure the capsule doesn't get caught in his throat. Another "trick" is to use divide the content into a smaller capsule if you have any blank capsules at home.

Well it was definitely to big for a pill pocket, I have size 5 empty capsules on hand. I decided to just tilt his head back & put it in his mouth. He did great & he's eating his dinner now that has 3 tablespoons of water in it. Hopefully it doesn't make him puke. If it does I have Cerenia & ondansetron in there medicine cabinet that I will give him at the AMPS feeding along with his next dose of clindamycin. Thank you @Sienne and Gabby (GA)

Spook was a little harder to pill today but we got it done. I had to move around the room with his bowl with him twice today to get to finish eating. Both him & Panzer refused to eat there +3 AMPS snack (chicken fancy feast) but ate it with Fortiflora on it. Chicken fancy feast is also the flavor that Panzer puked up a couple of nights ago. So we are going to hold off on that flavor for a few days. Other than that he's doing well. I have a small house to clean on Friday, so that’s when I'm going to get a clean catch from Spook & take it to the vet.

Clindamycin comes in a liquid. That’s the form I’ve given my cats. Keeping it in the refrigerator makes it palatable. I’m not at home to see the strength but I know with the liquid my vet prescribed, the dose is 1 ml once a day. I know that’s not very helpful but an option.

I don’t know about a 75 mg dose. You could google that.

He doesn't do well with liquid meds at all. The first night he swallowed the pill like a champ. It's been more difficult every time after that but he's getting it down & eating his wet food with 3 tablespoons of water in it immediately after. Him & Panzer don't drink water at all, although I offer a fresh bowl to them daily so I put 3 tablespoons in each of there 4 meals throughout the day & 2 tablespoons in there snack.

Clindamycin is a very strong antibiotic but good for mouth issues. Make sure he's getting a probiotic too. Or you'll get tummy upset. I can speak personally to this. :blackeye:

Thank you Wendy, good to know.. His poop has been a little runny since starting on it. He is getting provibial DC one time a day 3hrs after the antibiotic.

Spook had a very liquidity poop, so bad that I had to give him a bath. I'm seriously thinking about stopping the clindamycin. I know he has dental issues but this is really messing up his stomach. He's getting a provibial DC probiotic after the +3 AMPS snack. He doesn't act like his tummy hurts & he's been eating good. A day or two after starting the antibiotic I had to move around the room with him & coax him to eat but he's been doing fine since then. He does very well with a bath so if I need to continue the clindamycin then I will & I will bathe him as needed. What should I do? I am saving $ for Spook to get a dental, not sure how much it's going to cost but I plan on saving $1000 just incase. When Panzer had his dental it was almost $900 but he had all but his 2 top canines pulled.

I'd second Wendy's suggestion re. the S. boulardii. You want to start with about 1/4 - 1/3 of a capsule and gradually increase if you need to. It's not uncommon for an antibiotic to have GI side effects. This link has info on probiotics and treating diarrhea.
Unfortunately I only have $4 in my bank account until Tues & Spook will get his last dose of the antibiotic on Friday at Panzer's AMPS feeding. Sometimes I can get stuff overnight from Amazon but some stuff takes days to get here. I will definitely order some stuff to have on hand for the next time.

Take a look at the info in the link I provided. You may be able to adapt the methods they use with the probiotic you have on hand. I've used S.. boulardii from ReNew and if I'm remembering, it's not inexpensive. Jarrow's also is a good brand but I don't think any of the better probiotics are cheap.

Sorry, Christina. I have been out of town and haven’t been on the Board almost at all - very little. You know I would never deliberately ignore your tags or questions. Let me know if you need anything at all. I’m back home and am trying to get back into the swing of things.

Nothing to be sorry about, I just wasn't sure if the tagging option wasn't working. Sometimes people say they aren't getting tags so I thought that may be the case. We all have our own lifes outside of the board. I hope you had a great weekend & everything is going well with your kitty's.
I just wanted your opinion on the questions above about Spook. Panzer is doing well since I threatened him with & increase & switched shooting sides LOL:D

Update on Spook!!! He is still eating the same way he was before this antibiotic so no change there. The liquid poop hasn't been as bad since I stopped giving him mirilax. I've had to clean him with a wash cloth a couple of times but at least I didn't have to give him a bath. Right before him & Panzer's +6 PMPS feeding(before bedtime feeding) he did the pain meow in the litter box:banghead: As soon as he's done with the clindamycin which will be Friday morning I will be counting down 10 days before I either take a clean catch in or take him back to the vet at a later time in the day to hopefully get a cystocentesis. I would prefer that over a clean catch.

Okay, so the Clindamycin was for his teeth, right? And he had diarrhea before starting the Clindamycin or not? Are you giving probiotics (the Proviable?). Any S. boulardii? How are you getting the antibiotic into Spook? He sounds like you may be able to pill him, unlike wild Panzer.

Yes it was for his teeth. No diarrhea before the antibiotic, I wouldn't say he has diarrhea now but more of a liquid poop but only twice a day. I had to clean him off with a wash cloth before I left for work this morning. He hasn't pooped since this morning but I'm sure he's about to now. It seems like his routine pooping is in the am after +3 AMPS snack & after +6 PMPS bedtime feeding. He's taking the provibial after +3 AMPS snack. The S Boulardii was expired so I threw it away. I am getting down on the floor & putting Spook in between my knees with his head facing away from me & tilting his head back & putting the pill in his mouth, sometimes it's a struggle sometimes it's quick & easy. Panzer does well with pill pockets & Spook does too but the Clindamycin is to big for a pill pocket. I actually think Panzer would eat a pill right out of my hand because he's weird LOL remember the advil overdose
