Morning
Lovely low blue! See if you can get him to surf today!

True. It's really hard to know; sometimes, Mikan kept going down on MC foods, and other times, she came right back up. She likes to keep me guessing

Yes we do see very different effects from food at times.
Have you ever considered what might be influencing those effects?

So let's look at a couple of things that occur to me that might have influenced that seemingly unpredictable effect of carbs on his numbers.
If you catch a sharp drop I the early part of the cycle, 13% (for instance) might seem to do nothing, there's more insulin in his system at that point so the carbs are more readily counteracted by the insulin available.
If alternatively you give 13% after nadir, the same amount of food will probably see a greater effect on the bg, it might stop him in his tracks or raise him significantly.

How much the carbs affect a diabetic cat is a case off ECiD, and how they react to carbs can change, George when he was first diagnosed was not carb sensitive, and I learnt the hard way that I had to break out the big guns early if he dropped early in the cycle, if I wanted to avoid hours fighting low BG. When he relapsed after a steroid shot, he was much more carb sensitive

Another situation where they need more carbs can be when they break a bounce, some cats dive like a runaway train, you have to judge how much you need to give to make him app,y the breaks, and encourage him to surf.

I found that taking note meticulously of what he ate and when helped me, I also always looked back at the previous days cycle reviewed what I did, that helped me to fine tune the feeding so I could get the cycles I wanted.

Thanks Gill!
There are so many factors! You are so right about cats themselves changing their sensitivity to carbs. I am hoping that Mikan is becoming less volatile that I don't have to use a big gun often, but maybe to use higher LC (8-10%) to help her coast. Tricky part is to find what she likes - she is a finicky cat and she turns her nose up to a lot of things, even the ones she used to like (CATS!), leading to my serving up the cat buffet :rolleyes::rolleyes:. One thing for sure, unless she is in the hypo range, I will not feed her after nadir, except for a small amount of snack like freeze dry salmon or chicken.

The carb issues have been one of the most difficult things in FD, I find; it's both science and art, isn't it.

And roger on the record keeping. I have a book I write everything, BG, food, and behaviors, one page a cycle. Hope I will start seeing some consistent patterns soon that will make the management a bit less stressful :)

Wise words. Made all the difference in our progress first time around and seeing it spelled out like that is making me realize I need to get back to it, In our case I think Herman is doing mini bounces into low blues when he drops a little quicker than his body likes - taking more detailed notes and trying some carb manipulation should help.

And how!

Oooh look at all that pretty blue! Have another piece of cake for me!! Mikan, flash those pretty kitty whiskers at Jack and get him to go swimming with you! Have a great week! :bighug::bighug:
Good morning Christine!
I'll oblige and go for another piece! (if I am eating one for you, calorie doesn't count, right? :p)
I hope Mikan stays in a good range - you never know what she has in her furry sleeve!

Hi :) I saw in your SS that you tried for a time alphatrak at the same time as freestyle. Would you mind sharing what prompted you to try the alpha and why you stopped? I was thinking of doing something similar just because of vet's pressure...

That is so joyful :) celebrating with you
Thanks Shelly! :bighug:

Of course, I don't mind at all!
I started out using the AT2 as the vet recommended it. I was using it Jan-March this year. But then, I got familiar with this forum and TR protocol, and decided to make a transition to a human meter as that is more consistent with the protocol and forum communications. Besides, AT strips are so darn expensive! I still have AT strips and sometimes use it at AMPS along with FSL to just make sure I'm not missing anything, but all the decision making for her care is based upon the human meter. Hope this helps?

Good for you for shooting the whole dose
Oh boy is right lol, I'm sending positive vibes that Mikan can surf in all dark greens tonight :bighug::bighug::bighug:
Hi Diane,
Yeah, it's a test! I am just hoping that she can stay above 45 or so. So far so good.
I have to confess, I was scared to shoot the whole dose. I was shaking a bit shooting it :nailbiting:
But I really really really wants her to get going with this dose. We'll see how she does around +4ish. That's when she tends to dive :nailbiting::nailbiting::nailbiting:
