Does anyone else wish they or someone from their family ran a diagnostic lab or is it just me? Lab tests are so expensive
Took Shen to the vet today for blood-work and to get an opinion on his teeth. Paid nearly twice the amount for the report and it wasn’t even as comprehensive as the other two times before. His labs are normal but I’ve to check if the reference ranges of this lab are same as the previous labs.
I asked the vet if she could include the B12 test (since I wanted to see if he really needs the capsules) and she said the test is unnecessary since cats generally eat fish. I didn’t want to insist or argue with her so I decided to get it done separately
She instead asked me to get a routine urine test done, I don’t know why. Since she didn’t have the set-up for the serum electrolytes test, I had to get it done from another lab, where I added the B12 test.
I asked the vet about dental work and she said we’d take a call on it after the rest of the reports came. I don’t know if the remaining labs are of any relevance for a dental assessment but oh well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I find it weird that she was the one who claimed that a lot of his teeth need to be removed but hasn’t found it necessary to suggest getting a dental done now that his BG is regulated
His BG was 156 there (through the tests she ran) and she said not to give any insulin to him. Said it was within the normal range. It might have been lower had he not been fasting :’)
I requested her to prescribe something for his eyes, since his allergy flares up every now and then and the eye drops don’t help much. She said only steroids would work but we don’t want them since they’ll impact the BG. His eyes aren’t too bad right now but it doesn’t take a lot of rubbing to break his skin there.
I actually wanted to get his heart checked if he has to be anesthetized for the dental later but I forgot to mention it.
I think this is my last time with this vet. I just end up coming back with no information. Will go to Happy Tails next for a consultation regarding dental work.
