07/15 Herman amps 263 +2.5 221 +7 252 pmps 295 +3 169 +5 95 +7 95 +9 158

Yesterday was a blur. Upsetting and scary rushing around at the vet, getting supplies, etc. I didn’t have time to search the forum for input on dosing. The vet suggested 1 unit. I wondered if it was a bit high to start but in our first round of dealing with FD I played it a bit too safe with dosing early on and I think it backfired. I’ve since read up on a few recent other cases of falling out of remission and the starting dose seems to be 0.5 units.

Would appreciate some advice on whether to stay at 1 or go down to 0.5, we started back on insulin last night, hoping for lab results Monday. @tiffmaxee @Bron and Sheba (GA) @Bandit's Mom

No advice from me, just solidarity. My guy came out of remission too a couple weeks ago. I know it was a huge weight off when he came out of hiding and was eating normally so I’m glad Herman was snuggly this morning! :bighug:

A relief for sure, just looked at your SS….great job getting it under control so quickly! Did you ever determine what may have led him out of remission?

It was all him. I just serve my feline overlord :p not exactly, as neither vet did the test for pancreatitis. But that’s what he had the first time around and he was off his food. He didn’t eat until I campaigned for pain meds for him. Once he had those, it was like a switch flipped. So I’m almost sure it was pancreatitis.

Typically cats coming out of remission need to get somewhere near their previous turnaround dose. Herman's was 2.5 units. I wouldn't go back to 0.5 units. You do want to be more aggressive getting him into regulation this time, to increase the odds of re-remission.

If you like looking at spreadsheets, a couple recent out of remission ones are Kit and Tango. Of course, ECID.

Thanks for this. Makes sense. Will follow TR and take all increases as they come due. I’m a little curious if the vet finds an underlying issue or not and, if so, do you change how/when you increase in relation to treatment of the possible underlying cause (ie if it’s a dental issue) or just keep steady with the standard protocol while treating the other issue.

I always followed what the numbers/protocol told me to do. Dentals aren’t instant fixes, and depending on what is done, you might have some inflammation for a week plus following dental surgery, that would actually require you increase the dose needed temporarily. Otherwise glucose toxicity can develop.

Ok yes, thank you for this, makes sense. He saw green last night on this starting dose so I am happy with that and think it’s a good sign. Hoping he doesn’t bounce like before since he should be more used to green than when he was first diagnosed but who knows…he was such a crazy bouncer.
