Charlie Intro, may need help tonight. On vetsulin.

Hi friends,

My name is Jaymi and my sweet kitty is Charlie. We've been struggling for 2-3 weeks now since diagnosis. He was/is DKA, had triaditis, dehydrated (on Sub Q now). We were started on Vetsulin because it was the only thing available, and I'm fighting as hard as I can to be switched to Lantus or Prozinc. She wants me to do 2U Vetsulin, M/D Glucose Support Food kibble/wet. He HATES wet food. I'm still trying to find a LC one he likes but I'm giving the M/D for now until we see a new vet next Thursday.

I need a lot of handholding through this. Tonight his PMPS was 91 and I did 0.5U because he did not eat much, but syringe fed 40-50ish ML of the M/D pate right before dosing. He will eat the kibble on his own here and there, he doesn't eat too often in general. I know with the food we are throwing gas on the fire but I feel like I have to do it since he will actually eat it and she won't give me Lantus yet.

I know that's a low PMPS. I'm so scared for my Charlie. I am trying so hard to get him better. I've already dropped 3k on him (happily) and am hoping my GFM gets shared more on my FB so I can continue to care for him.

Also, any feedback on posting here is encouraged, like what to include or where best to post. I'm scared we'll hypo tonight (we have not yet). I also have a tendency to post pre shot to ask for advice, I hope I'm not annoying. Are there keywords I need to know? or better threads for help? I'm new to message boards.

Hi Jaymi! Yes, this is where you should be posting so good job!

I know you're scared tonight but as long as you have high carb foods or a simple sugar like Karo, honey or pancake syrup, you'll be able to bring him up if he does drop too low.

If you're having trouble affording the care for Charlie, you might want to contact Diabetic Cats in Need. They have a Facebook page as well as a website where you can apply for help.

Not sure how much longer I'll be on, but I'll tag @Bron and Sheba (GA) . She's in Australia so it's early evening for her.

Glad to see you posting on here too (I’m Becky RJ Van Cleave on FB)
Some posting tips (post in the main forum and then you will be directed to the insulin forum):
1) copy the website link to your previous post (condo) and paste that into your current post. I used to be able to rename the link with the date I had posted it on, or called it ‘previous post’ but I can’t remember how I did that! So once you post again, you’d copy the link for this post and start your next post with the link.
2) title uour post with “Charlie AMPS (or PMPS) (give test result), then include any other tests like +1@51, +3@63, etc.
3) if you have a question use the ? icon in the title. If you have an emergency (stalling and need help; have a hypo starting or active) use the 911 icon- BUT once you get help started, go back and edit the title to remove the 911.
4) keep your spreadsheet up to date
5) if you need sleep, stress that point. Often times the focus here is on what is best for the cat. The experience here is more on how cats do, and not so much on how people are doing. That was my experience anyway. I’m not saying that is a bad thing in anyway, but there were times I had to make a decision that would benefit me (mainly sleep). Just be honest if you can handle something or not.

looks like Charlie is going ok looking at the SS. can you tell me what he’s been eating since he had the 0.5 U dose of Vetsulin please?

Can you tell me if you are testing for ketones in the urine please?

Also you need to be feeding lots of food if he has just had DKA.
When was he diagnosed with DKA and when did he come out of hospital?
 
I’ve just read through all the blood and vet reports. I noticed the ketones were negative and I did not see any mention of DKA but did of pancreatitis
 
How are things going Jaymi?
Let him eat whatever he will eat at the moment. Don’t worry if it is not diabetic friendly. The most important thing is he eats.
If he will only eat kibble, that is fine for now.
Please post each preshot at the moment so we can help you.

Do you have honey or Karo at home in case of very low numbers?you can always rub it on his gums if he won’t eat

@Bandit's Mom , @tiffmaxee , @Suzanne & Darcy , anyone around to help this morning.. I couldn't figure out an edit so I posted a new thread, AMPS this morning is 94 and I don't know how much to give or if I should start syringe feeding, please help!
