After almost two years OTJ, Oscar’s blood sugar is elevated again. We moved so I now have a different vet, but requested Lantus to get us going. I was able to get it filled today and we’ll be starting our tracking tonight. Going with SLGS this time as I have a 7 week old baby and don’t think I have it in me to handle TR.

He’s not eating a whole lot right now and seems nauseous. We’ve got anti nausea pills and mirataz so hopefully that gets him going but I welcome any suggestions to prompt him to eat. I’ll syringe feed if I have to.

Just wanted to say hi to everyone. Oh and to let everyone know that my Walmart pharmacy sells glargine pens individually and with a Good Rx card, it only cost me $35. Not bad when my old vet used to charge me close to $100 for one.

I’m sorry to hear he’s out of remission. What anti nausea did you get? I use both ondansetron and Cerenia since they work differently. Have you tried things like baby food, tuna, those Inaba Churu lickables? And did the vet do any other tests that could explain why he fell out of remission? The lack of apetite can usually mean there’s something else going on. For both Minnie and Bobo, it was IBD.

They did a cerenia shot at the vet yesterday and I have odansetron pills at home. They worked last time, so I’m hoping. I did just get him to eat some Weruva chicken, though he mostly just slurped the juice. I’ll take anything. He’s not a big fish guy, but I will get some baby food and other things to test out too.

Hm. She did blood work and it all came back okay but now that you mention it, she didn’t really question why with me. We’ve suspected IBD for awhile so it’s possible that’s it. I’ll definitely follow up. Last go round, he had pancreatitis.

Sorry to hear you are back, I hope it's just a quick visit. Did the vet have any ideas why he might be out of remission? Any dental issues or other inflammation/infection?

Have you tested recently for ketones?

I hope so too! She did blood work and it all came back normal. She glanced briefly at his teeth and didn’t say anything. We’ve suspected IBD for awhile so perhaps that’s the root. I’ll have to go back. I wish they all questioned why.

They did test for them yesterday and it was negative. I’ll check out that link and try everything. Thanks so much

To diagnose IBD, you have to start with an ultra sound but the only definite way to diagnose is with an endoscopy which a lot of folks don’t want to do. I did it for Minnie because she was already hospitalized and needed to go under for a feeding tube, but with Bobo I’m just treating the symptoms after the ultra sound since it’s exactly like it was like for Minnie. Could it be a pancreatitis flare up then?

Great pic btw! Which one is Oscar?! This is what Bobo does too and then I start syringe feeding. Luckily he’s very good about it, Minnie wasn’t it. AD food is easier to syringe feed but with a diabetic cat that’s not a good option since it’s high carb. I’d save that option as last resort in case nothing else works. You’re not there yet!

I have to look back at his files, but if I’m correct, the old vet did an ultrasound and said his intestines were slightly thickened, so I think it could be true. I’ll bring that up to the new vet. His pancreatic numbers on the bloodwork were normal so I don’t think so?

Thanks! It makes them look like they love each other more than they actually do :) Oscar is the gray boy. Chief is the ginger. Yeah I might try to blend up their normal food to make it smoother. I’m hoping once he has a good amount in him, he’ll start eating on his own. That’s what happened last time so fingers crossed.

A/D is 12%, so medium carb food. An alternative that's easy to syringe is Royal Canin Recovery, which is 3% carbs. TikiCat has some Mousse products which are pretty creamy and might be able so syringe. Whatever you syringe, keep in mind that kitty could get a food aversion to it, so it's best to do something that isn't part of his regular diet. I fostered a hepatic lipidosis cat that went completely off of chicken, much less a particular brand.

The test for pancreatitis is not part of the standard blood panel, it's an add on test. If you suspect GI issues, a GI panel with includes B12, folate, TL1 and test for pancreatitis might be a good one to run. Some cats with GI issues have low B12.

I didn’t know that about Royal Canin! I need to get some for Bobo. Luckily he hasn’t gotten food aversion toward anything I’ve syringe fed him thus far!!

Just like my avatar of Minnie and Bobo. Although tive come to realize since she passed that he loved her more than he let on…

Oh good thinking. I’ll get some of the tiki cat ones and I’ll call the vet and see if they sell the Royal Canin recovery. I don’t want him to hate his current food. He’s been nibbling at food so I’m hoping he’s on the upswing.

I’ll also check with them and see which panels they ran. I know they did two different ones so I’ll check about pancreatitis.
