6/12- Bella- data question

Hi all!

following the SLGS method I did a curve Saturday which I up her dose and because I was home and could due to the long weekend I have been testing +4 as I wanted to be sure she didn’t go too low.
Todays numbers are confusing me? Is this normal to be lower AMPS/13.7, and higher +4/18.6, +6/15.4. I wasn’t going to do more than +4 but couldn’t understand it. She does free feed but todays numbers have confused me because we had been getting reasonable numbers. Fed chicken breast, tuna and ziwipeaks.

Hi Tara I noticed where you have information on your profile you have said
/stage 1/2 chronic kidney disease. I would add that to your signature also :cat:

No it turns out we don’t have kidney disease says the new vet! Turns out excess water drinking flushed her kidneys and creatine levels are good! No renal food needed but my old vet suggested we continue on the renal food!

I found this
Here is an explanation about bouncing.
  • Bouncing - Bouncing is simply a natural reaction to what the cat's system perceives as a BG value that is "too low". "Too low" is relative. If a cat is used to BGs in the 200's, 300's, or higher for a long time, then even a BG that drops to 150 can trigger a "bounce". Bouncing can also be triggered if the blood glucose drops too low and/or too fast. The pancreas, then the liver, release glucogon, glycogen and counter-regulatory hormones. The end result is a dumping of "sugar" into the bloodstream to save the cat from going hypoglycemic from a perceived low. The action is often referred to as "liver panic" or "panicky liver". *Usually*, a bounce will clear kitty's system within 3 days (6 cycles).

If you ever need to find something out you can go where it says search and put in part of what you might be looking for , then some posts will come up with the word in bold letters and you can look at each post.

I just put in bouncing just now
But of course you can always post and ask :cat:

Thanks I will search next time- I also want to know if her numbers seem ok. Are we doing ok… do these numbers indicate a positive direction toward regulation? Does bouncing disappear with time and being regulated?

HI Tara,
It is going to take time to find the best dose for Bella. Feline diabetes is something you cant rush. And Bella is in charge of the dance!
If you try and rush it, it will just go pear shaped.
So just keep feeding a low carb diet, testing preshots and test when you can in between, testing for ketones. and asking questions if you are worried or concerned about anything. We are always here.
Bouncing is very frustrating for the caregiver but it is not hurting Bella. Some cats stop bouncing quite quickly and some can bounce all the way to remission.
If you can work out why she is bouncing, you can sometimes do something to try and stop it.
If for example, if Bella is bouncing because she is dropping fast, you can feed the curve to slow the drop.
If she is dropping too low, you can test and intervene with food to stop the drop from dropping too low.
If she is bouncing because she is not used to being in lower numbers than she is used to than all you can do is keep increasing the dose, as per the dosing method you are following and let her get used to the lower numbers again. Some cats bounce from blue and yellow numbers because they are so used to the higher numbers they think the blues and yellows are too low and the body panics and triggers a bounce.
Are we doing ok
Yes! You are doing everything right. It just takes time.
Try and get at least 1 test in every pm cycle if you can.
The thing that FD taught me was patience
If you need any, we give away patience pants here for caregivers who don't have any or who need them!;)

Thank you ladies! Your reassurance is appreciated and the tips to help us bounce out (or so to speak). I’ll take five breaths and I’m comforted to read it’s not hurting her. I’m just happy our numbers are getting lower.

So complex, getting an accurate picture of her curve and her nadir if she continues to bounce sporadically. Thank you again
