Do Lantus/Glargine opened pens need to be refrigerated if using a syringe and not the pen needle?

Regarding Lantus/Glargine insulin pens. I've heard that once a pen is opened it should stay at room temperatore, with the unopened pens remaining in the refrigerator. However, I found this article at https://thecatclinic.com.au/using-glargine-in-diabetic-cats-2/
stating that "Insulin glargine has a shelf-life of 4 weeks once opened and kept at room temperature. We have found that opened vials stored in the refrigerator can be used for up to 6 months." The article goes on to state storing the opened pen at room temperature is for the benefit of the pen needle itself which I interpret wouldn't affect the insulin if administering with a syringe. It states, "If using an insulin pen, the manufacturer recommends that the pen and cartridge be kept at room temperature and not refrigerated. This is to reduce the changes in volume of insulin dispensed associated with changes in temperature."
So if using a syringe can one return the glargine pen to the refrigerator to prolong its life?

The answer is YES! I’m glad you asked. Humans don’t refrigerate lantus because they don’t use syringes. Refrigerate your pens and they should last to the last drop and the date on the box.

Don't keep the pen in the door of the fridge though. The door is exposed to higher temperatures and movement. Store the pen inside the fridge and you are good to use it to the last drop.
