I’m working on transitioning Bobo to a raw food diet since he won’t eat any low carb canned food, but is pretty excited about the raw so far. The brand I’m using is Steve’s Quest and I wanted to get some input on calculating the right amount. Bobo is 15 pounds and should stay at around 300 calories a day. I was told he should eat one cup, or about 8 ounces of the raw food a day, but the caloric content differs from flavor to flavor.

Pork is 36 calories per ounce so if he eats one 8-ounce cup a day that’s 288

Chicken is 189 per 8-ounce cup

White fish is 126 per 8-ounce cup

Should I go by the weight or the caloric content? For the latter, I’d have to feed him more of the chicken and white fish than the pork.

Thank you!

Okay the manufacturer feeding instructions are by the weight not caloric content and I thought that wasn’t right. Of course, he’s in the ravenous state right now so I’ll probably more than 300 until his diabetes is regulated.

I feed my cats a home made raw diet of beef, lamb, pork, chicken, heart, kidney and liver and chicken wings for bone content.
Harry is 6kg (13.2 lbs) and I feed him 120 grams a day. Any more and he puts on weight.
Clover eats much the same.
So 120 grams divided by 28.35 (grams in an ounce) = 4.2 ounces
I weigh the food out each day as I don't want them to get fat.

So you go by the weight not the calories? Right now on his canned wet food diet, I go by how many calories he eats in a day not the weight of the food. He gets 3 cans of fancy feast which equal to roughly 230 calorie and then he gets treats too.

My girls are small, just 8 pounds 12-14 oz so they get about 2 1/2-3 1/5 oz depending on the protein. Right now I am feeding lamb so just 2 1/2 oz or 150 calories. They always scream for food at meal time so think they need more but I don’t want them overweight.

That’s pretty much 1/2 of Bobo’s weight and he gets hits about 300 calories, but I never worried about the ounces before. 3 cans of fancy feast and that’s that. Should I look at both or pick one over the other. The calorie content on each flavor is very different.

also, as he’s unregulated still he’s in the ravenous stage

PS - each can of fancy feast is 3 ounces

I feel you feed the amount of calories needed to keep him at his ideal weight. If overweight you feed slightly less. Until regulated as you know he will need more food. Just do an average of the foods as far as calories go. I do not know if we are given the true numbers. I’d just let the scale be your guide. Take into account how active he is. Max wasn’t active at all so unless low just needed 2 cans of fancy feast a day plus freeze dried treats. I wonder if he got all the nutrients he needed.

Okay. That’s my thinking too. We’re transitioning so he’s down to 2 cans of fancy feast and 2 1/4 cups of the raw. Good news is he loves both pork and chicken so far. I’m waiting on the white fish to come in and that’s the one with the least amount of calories. It makes sense, fish is alway less. I thought the hardest part of this process was going to be finding him a a suitable low carb food, but he eats it better than FF so woohoo!!!

it’s also not that much more expensive at $15 for a 2 pound bag!

I use weight because I use a mix of the raw meat each day so it is easier this way. Up until now it has maintained Harry's weight but I weighed him the other day and he had put on a bit of weight, so I am cutting back a bit for him. I don't want them fat either.
I feed them 4 times a day and they never ask for food in between unless I am cutting cheese which Harry loves and he get a tiny piece which satisfies him.

Ah because you make it yourself. Makes sense. Yeh Bobo was always pretty good about eating at the right times but right now he’s ravenous in the mornings then he calms down after about +6 until dinner time. I think he’ll get back to normal once his bg gets regulated
