Not a good day so far today. Pumpkin woke me up just before feeding time vomiting up some mucus. That's been happening more and more frequently. It had just happened yesterday, and now it's three times in six days.

By the time I had cleaned it up, she was yowling from the spare bedroom. She very rarely goes in there, and certainly not at meal times. She came out when I opened the fridge to get food. It's just contributing to this very strong sense that something's off with her (even more off than she's been since the diabetes started).

I have an appointment with a new vet this Sunday.

She just went to the litter box, strained, and only a few drops of urine came out. I got an appointment with the new vet for later this morning.

Looks like it could be a UTI. Good luck at the vet.

Is there a long gap between meals overnight? Vomiting foam in the mornings is usually a sign of acid build up. Adding a snack at night so her stomach isn't empty for a long time might take care of the vomiting.

The longest gap is 4 hours. She gets PM meals at 7:30 pm, 9:30 pm, 10:30 pm, 11:30 pm, and 3:30 am. I added the 3:30 am meal after I first noticed the morning bile vomiting. That seems to help for a bit but now it’s happening more often again.

New vet is wonderful. Up to date on feline DM treatment, asking all the right questions, ready to get to work on the potential UTI and then knocking out causes of the insulin resistance.

Unfortunately Pumpkin injured herself during her exam jumping down from the table. We weren’t able to do the tests with how spicy she was so we were going to try a higher dose of gabapentin tomorrow and then sedate if that didn’t work. But, when I got her home she had a terrible limp and was in a lot of pain.

I’m back at the vet and they’re working on getting her into urgent care to take a closer look at the leg and then just go ahead with all the tests we were going to do tomorrow.

Poor Pumpkin. :bighug: Sounds like she's in the right place for her to be now. I'm glad you found a keeper vet.

Well, we’re back after a much longer day than expected. Pumpkin appears to have a sprain. No sign of a fracture. She’s still limping badly and not in good spirits. I have bupe for pain. And an antibiotic in case she has a UTI. We should have the results tomorrow on the urine test.

Are they going to do a urine culture? You really need more than a day to do that. A urine culture will grow the bacteria, and tell you what type of antibiotic will treat it. The overnight urinalysis will just say infection yes or no. What type of antibiotic did they give you? If you don't have already, you might want to get a probiotioc. Antibiotics can kill the good tummy flora, making them feel icky.

Glad to hear it's just a sprain. I had a black and white kitty (Neko's buddy) who was clumsy and got a few sprains. It was over in a week or two.

They’re doing a urine culture.

They sent me home with clavamox.

The first vet I talked to (the one I really like) said no need to start antibiotics until we get the urine results back given that Pumpkin produced a good stream of urine a couple hours after the straining incident. The urgent care doctor said just go ahead and do the antibiotics. Pumpkin has gotten a pretty upset stomach from antibiotics in the past, so I’m going to wait and see. If we get results tomorrow or she’s having more problems urinating I’ll get her started.

What do you recommend in the way of probiotics?

Also, my plan for tonight is to feed her in about an hour once the waiting period post-sedation is over. That’ll be an hour and a half late so I’m going to do a half dose if she’s eating well and take things from there. What do you think?

Lots of options of human probiotics. As long as multiple species of Bifidobacter and Lactobacillus bacteria. I think some people feed Renew Ultimates. Proviable from the vet is another option.

Did they sedate her or give anaesthesia? The Lantus doesn't take effect for 2-3 hours after the shot, so it's possible to give more than half a dose, cause you do have time to get food in her before it onsets. Plus, she's in high enough numbers.

They sedated her.

After seeing her PS, I went with 4.5U, or 3/4 of the dose we had planned to be at. I've seen her spiral from traumatic vet visits and new medications before, so I just wanted to play it a little safe. I'll return to her normal dose tomorrow morning assuming she's in good spirits.

So far so good. Her appetite is getting back to normal and she's drinking and urinating.
