Hi everyone,

Bear's back up a bit higher today. I'm assuming a bounce? As we are back on TR schedule, I believe he is due for an increase tomorrow.

I did have a question about hypos. I of course have the hypo FAQ pinned and have referenced Jojo's toolbox many a time, but I'm wondering at what point during a hypo you give LC vs MC vs HC? I know when I've posted before when he was hypoing people have said give LC or give MC, but what is that cutoff point and how do you know when to give what?

It looks like the bounce is clearing and if it is see how low Bear goes tonight as you might want to wait to increase and see tomorrow’s cycle if there’s a blue string or a green nadir.

I don’t see from your ss that Bear ever had a hypo or was even in low numbers. There’s a difference btw. A cat can be under 50 but not have a symptomatic hypo. You give hc if under 50 and then check the bg in 20-30 minutes. If still under 50 or low 50’s try another teaspoon or two of hc. It depends on how carb sensitive a cat is as to whether you give mc or hc when surfing tge 50’s and also how early in the cycle. If close to nadir lc may work fine once over 50.

I suggest the first time this happened you post for help. Someone will stay with you and guide you until it’s there’s safe surfing. They can often go up only to go back down again so you might to test for a few hours. You don’t want to stop testing until your cat is able to stay up without hc or mc for 2 hours.
Remember every cat is different.

Thanks! I suppose he never hypo’d, but was lower than I was comfortable with (well at least after I found this group. The first day he was given insulin he was limp on the floor and i had to rush him to the ER where he was hospitalized for the DKA. I found this group shortly after). This guideline is helpful, thank you! :)

Question for you - what defines "newly diagnosed" per TR regulations?
1 year since diabetes diagnoses marks the transition from newly diagnosed.

Some general guidelines for lower numbers are in this Sticky Note: Don't Panic! or How to Handle Low Numbers
However, there is a large ECID factor. Cats vary in how carb sensitive they are. You have to learn what range works for Bear. Any time you give higher carbs, try recording quantity of food, when, and percent of carbs in the Remarks section of the spreadsheet. That way you'll see how Bear responds. The timing of the cycle of the lower numbers also matters. Insulin is stronger earlier in the cycle, and you may need higher % carb early on, and lower later on in the cycle. At first, I'd err on the side of overcarbing and see what the effects are, in case he's one of those cats that need more carbs to move. Definitely post here for help and ask people helping you why they said what they said in terms of carbs. I also found it helpful to read threads where others were handling low numbers, to learn.
