I hope you will all bare with me as I ask beginner question.

In a few min. I will give my cat his first injection of insulin. My first question, he was prescribed 1 unit after each meal. My question what is the indication of 1 unit on the syringe? Guess I can't upload an image.

There is a big black line then a line going one direction followed by a line going the opposite like this l l
l The forum keeps changing the location of the line.
Am I correct that the 3rd line is 1 unit and the 2nd line is 1/2 unit?
Here is the image ...maybe.

Sounds like you have the right idea. Sometimes what helps me when I second guess is I literally count each line: 0, .5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, and then 5 is that big number 5 on the syringe. The half units are on the side and the whole units are in the middle.

Were you able to see the image, is the arrow at the 1 unit mark?

I see the image but I don't see an arrow? Are you talking about the plunger? The plunger is not at 1 unit.

What kind of insulin are you using? If you go to the forum for your insulin type (Lantus, Prozinc, etc.), there is a sticky that also goes more into how to read the syringes and draw your dose. That may be of help too.

Welcome
Here is a link helping us to help you link. If you noticed, our members have some basic information about their cat's in their signature. This helps us to not pester you by asking the same questions (your cat's name, insulin type, date of diagnosis, etc.) repeatedly. We also have a link to our spreadsheet in our signature. We are very numbers driven. The spreadsheet is a record of your cat's progress. By linking it in your signature, we can follow along and provide feedback should you need the help. The blue link will also tell you how to set up our spreadsheet and explain how it works.
If you need help setting it up just ask , we have a member who will be happy to set it up for you
Are you home testing ,it's the only way to keep your kitty safe

Hi and welcome to the forum.
We are happy to help you in any way so ask any questions you like.
I'm glad you were able to get the amount to draw up in the syringe sorted out.
As well as the 2 main meals before the insulin dose, it is a good idea to give a couple of snacks of the same food during the first 6 hours after all doses of the insulin.

You said he was prescribed 1 unit after each meal. The shots need to be every 12 hours so does that mean you’re only feeding 2 meals a day, at every 12 hours? Diabetic cats can’t process the nutrients in food well so they need more food and it’s easier on their pancreas to feed smaller meals throughout the day. Feeding only twice a day is old fashioned advice that works for dogs not cats. Most of us feed the 2 larger meals at shot times and then smaller meals or treats throughout the day :cat:
